Bowers, Henry Francis, lawyer, founder, was born Aug. 12, 1837, in Baltimore, Md. In 1871-75 he was county recorder of Clinton county, Iowa; was a member of the city council of Clinton; and for three years was on the staff of Governor John H. Gear. In 1887 he founded the American protective association, and was its supreme president for the first six years of its existence.

He was appointed judge advocate for the department of Tennessee with rank of major in 1863. He was killed March 6, 1866, in Garrison's Station, N.Y.
Bowers, William Wallace, soldier, state senator, congressman, was born Oct. 20, 1834, in Whitestown, N.Y. He enlisted as a private in company I, first Wisconsin cavalry in 1862; and was mustered out as second sergeant in 1865. He removed to San Diego in 1869; and in 1873 was elected a member of the California state legislature. In 1874-82 he was collector of customs for the San Diego district. In 1886 he was elected state senator for four years; in 1891-97 he was a representative from California to the fifty-second, fifty-third and fifty-fourth congresses.

He is president of the Bowersock milling company; and president of various other corporations at Lawrence, Kas.
Bowie, George Washington, soldier, was born in Maryland. In 1847 he became first lieutenant in the eighth regiment Iowa infantry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers.
Bowie, James, soldier, inventor, was born in 1795 in Elliot Springs, Tenn. He entered the United States army during the Mexican war; and attained the rank of captain. He, with his brother, invented the celebrated instrument for more than two generations known as the Bowie knife. Col. Bowie fell at the Alamo, San Antonio, Texas, on March 6, 1836, with Crockett, Bonham and Travis, there being only one hundred and sventy-two men against four thousand men of whom they killed or wounded about one-half. The whole one-hundred and seventy-two died.
Bowie, Odin, farmer, soldier, state senator, governor, was born Nov. 10, 1836, in Prince George county, Md. He was a captain in the Mexican war; frequently served in the assembly and senate of the state; and was the thirty-first governor of Maryland in 1867-73. He was president of the Baltimore and Potomac railway company from the time of its construction; and was also president of the Baltimore city passenger railway company. He died Nov. 4, 1894, in Bowie, Md.

In 1849-53 he was a representative from Maryland to the thirty-first and thirty-second congresses. In 1871 he became chief justice of the sixth judicial circuit; and a member of the court of appeals. He died March 13, 1881, in Montgomery county, Md.
