dent of Seton hall college until 1864; and in 1868-73 was director of the Roman catholic seminary in Wheeling, W.Va., when he was appointed rector of St. Elizabeth's church of New York City. He is also archdiocesan censor of books. He is the author of Curious Questions: Truth and Error; Essays on the Popes; The Age of Unreason; and Immortality of the Soul. Brannan, John Milton, soldier, was born in 1819 in the District of Columbia. In 1865 he was made brigadier-general of volunteers. In 1865 he received the brevet of brigadiergeneral in the regular army for his services at Atlanta; and that of major-general for his services during the civil war. He died Dec. 17, 1892, in New York City.

He is the author of numerous works on technochemical subjects, the most noted of which are Metallic Alloys; Techno Chemical Receipt Book; and the Metal Workers Handbook of Receipts and Processes. Bransford, Clifton Wood, journalist, manufacturer, banker, was born Jan. 24, 1858, in Owensboro, Ky. He attended Bransford institute, which was founded by his father; and graduated in 1887 from the Cumberland university at Lebanon, Tenn. In 187778 he attended the Louisville law school; but subsequently abandoned law to enter journalism. For ten years he was editor of the Messenger of Owensboro, Ky. Since 1887 he has been successfully engaged in the milling business; and is the proprietor He of the Bransford mills and elevator. was instrumental in organizing the Owensboro banking company, of which he has always been president. In 1900 he was delegate-at-large from Kentucky to the democratic national convention.

Branner, John Casper, educator, geologist, was born July 4, 1850, in Newmarket, Tenn. He has been a professor of geology in the university of California since it was established. He has been vice-president since 1899 and for sometime was acting president. He is a fellow of the American association for the advancement of science. In 1904 he became president of the geological society of America. Brannon, Henry, lawyer, legislator, jurist, author, was born Nov. 26, 1837, in WinchesIn 1859-81 he practiced law in ter, Va. West Virginia; was prosecuting attorney of Louis county in 1860-64; and was a member of the West Virginia state legislature in 1870-71. In 1880 he became circuit judge; and since 1888 has been judge of the state supreme court of West Virginia. He is the author of Treatise on the Rights and Privileges Guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment.

Branstow, Lewis Orsnolred, educator, clergyman, theologian,- was born March 23, 1834, in Brewer, Maine. In 1862 he became chaplain in the twelfth Vermont regiment. In 1872-84 he was a pastor at Burlington, Vt. In 1885 he was appointed professor of theology in Yale university. Brant, Joseph, Indian chief, was born about 1740 on the banks of the Ohio river. He was civilized and educated. In 1763 he was in Pontiac's war and fought on the English side. His sister was the wife of Sir William Johnson. He fought for England in the revolutionary war; and took active part in the massacre of the colonists. After the war he obtained a grant of land for his teacher.
