were producing about two hundred locomotives a year. In 1883 the company bought the works back again at a fair price. He was three times mayor of Dunkirk. The works are yet in operation, employing over one thousand men in busy times. He died April 20, 1887, in Dunkirk, N.Y. Brooks, Jabez, educator, college president, author, was born Sept. 18, 1833, in England. He received a thorough education in public and private schools. He came to the United States in 1840; and became a student in the Rock river seminary at Mount Morris, 111. In 1850 he graduated from the Wesleyan university with the degree of A.M.; and he received the degree of D.D. from Lawuniversity rence of Wisconsin. In 1850 he became principal of the Watertown seminary; in 1854-57 was principal of the Hamline university at Red Wing, Minn.; and in 1861-69 he was president of that institution. He is the author of Attic Greek, a book for beginners and has published several yhamplets, sermons and commencement addresses; and many articles in state and other papers. Brooks, James, journalist, congressman, was bom Nov. 10, 1810, in Portland, Maine. In 1839 he was elected to the state legislature of Maine; and in 1836 established the New York Daily Express, of which he was the chief editor and proprietor. In 1847 he was elected a member of the New York state legislature. In 1849-53 and 1863-73 he was a representative from New York City to the thirty-first and thirty-second and the thirty-eighth to the forty-second coDgressea. He died April 30, 1873, in Washington, D.C. Brooks, James Gordon, journalist, author, poet, was bom Sept. 3, 1801, in Claverack, N.Y. In 18S5 he established the Literary Gazette, which was united with the Athenaeum. He was subsequently with the Morning Courier. In all these journals he published poems. He died Feb. 20, 1841, in Albany, N.Y.
Brooks, John, soldier, physician, state senator, governor, was bom May 31, 1752, in Medford, Mass. He was in nearly all the battles of the revolution. He was a member of the Massachusetts state legislature; and was state senator and councilor. He was governor of Massachusetts in 1816-23. Brooks, Joseph, clergyman, state senator, governor, was born Nov. 1, 1831, in Butler county, Ohio. During the civil war he aided in raising the eleventh and thirty-third Missouri regiments; and was chaplain of the latter. He moved to Little Rock; was elected Arkansas state senator in 1870; and in 1873 he became governor. He was postmaster at Little Rock in 1875-77. He died April 30, 1877, in Little Rock, Ark. philanthropist, was born in 1793 in New Milford, Conn. He was a manufacturer of woolen cloth; and was later in the mercantile business. He made various charitable bequests, among which was ten thousand dollars to the Rochester city hospital; a like sum to St. Mary's hospital; and five thousand dollars each to the industrial school and the Female charitable society. He also bequeathed one hundred and twenty thousand dollars to the university of Virginia. He died Aug. 9, 1877, in Rochester,
