Brown, Elmer Ellsworth, educator, was born Aug. 28, 1861, in Chautauqua county, N.Y. He received his education in the common schools of Lee county, 111. ; attended the state normal school; studied in the university of Michigan ; and the university of Halle, Germany. He taught in the public schools of Illinois and Michigan; then in the university of Michigan; and now fills the professorship of theory and practice of education in the
graduated from Dartmouth; graduated from the Union theological seminary in 1877; and in 1877-79 attended the universities of Germany, studying biblical literature. In 188190 he was associate professor of biblical philology at Union theological seminary; where he has been professor of Hebrew and cognate languages since 1890. He is the author of Assyriology; and The Teachings of the Apostles.
Brown, Francis Henry, physician, surgeon, founder, author, was bom Aug. 8, 1835, in Boston, Mass.
In 1861 he graduated from Harvard with the degrees of A.M. and M. D.; and in 1862-64 he was acting assistant surgeon in the United States army. He has been a physician and surgeon in the leading hospitals of Boston, Mass.; and he was the founder, secretary and surgeon of the Children's hospital of that

and A Hundred Years Ago, poems. Brown, Ernest William, educator, author, was born Nov. 29, 1866, in Hull, England. Since 1891 he has been professor of mathematics at Haverford college. He is the author of Treatise on the Lunar Theory; and Celestial
Mechanics.
Brown, Ethan Allen,
jurist, governor, United States senator, was born July 4, 1776, in Darien, Conn. He was judge of the supreme court of Ohio in 1810-18; in 1818-22 was the seventh governor of the state; and in 182225 was United States senator. He was United States minister to Brazil in 1830-34; and commissioner of the general land office in 1835-36. He removed to Indiana in 1836; and was a member of the Indiana legislature in 1842. He died Feb. 24, 1853, in Indianapolis,

Brown, Fletcher, clergyman, college president, was born Aug. 3, 1850, in Guernsey county, Ohio. He served as a member of the Des Moines conference for eight years. He was vice-president of Simpson college for five years; and since 1892 has been president of that institution. Brown, Foster Vincent, lawyer, congressman, was born Dec. 24, 1854, in White county, Tenn. He was attorney-general of the fourth Chattanooga judicial district in 188694. He removed to CSiattanooga in 1890; and was a, delegate to the republican national convention in 1884. In 1895-97 he was a representative from Tennessee to the fifty-fourth congress as a republican.
