participated in the hazardous ascent of the Mississippi river under Farragut ; and in the first attck on Vicksburg in 1862. He was promoted lieutenantcommander in 1862; and shortly afterward was placed in charge of the Indianola ironclad, which was captured by the confederates Feb. 24, 1863. He was promoted commander in 1866, captain in 1877, commodore in 1887, rear-admiral in 1893, and was retired in 1897. Brown, George Eugene, educator, college president, was born May 18, 1867, in Mason City, Iowa. He has occupied positions of teacher, county superintendent, editor and president of the Midland normal school; and is well known as a writer on educational topics. Brown, George H., lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born in New Jersey. He was a member of the convention which formed the state constitution of 1844. In 1851-53 he was a representative from New Jersey to the thirty-second congres^. In 1861 he was an associate justice of the supreme court of New Jersey. He died in New Jersey. Brown, George Loring, painter, artist, was born Feb. 2, 1814, in Boston, Mass. He spent twenty years in Antwerp, Kome, Florence, Paris and London; and returned to the United States in 1860 with a high reputation as a landscape painter at home and abroad. Among his more important pictures are The Bay 19, 1835, in Indiana.

He is president of the Brown shoe company of St. Louis, Mo.; a director in the Mercantile trust company of St. Louis; and in several other organizations for the upbuilding of that city. He has taken a leading part in maintaining religious and charitable institutions; has been president of the St. Louis young men's christian association; president of the board of trustees of the Union methodist episcopal church; and is a leading member of various other organizations. ville,

He was the author of The Origin and Growth of Civil Liberty in Maryland. He died Sept. 6, 1890, at Lake Mohawk, N.Y. Brown, Glenn, architect, author, was born Sept. 13, 1854, in Fauquier county, Va. Since 1879 he has been engaged in architectural work in the District of Columbia, Virginia, Maryland and South Carolina. He is the author of A History of the United States Capitol.
