He received a collegiate education. He is trustee of the estate of Capt. J. J. Vandergrift founder of the town of Vandergrift, Pa. He is president of the Pittsburg trust company; president of the Pittsburg terminal warehouse and transfer company; secretary and treasurer of the Keystone commercial company; director of the Keystone national bank of Pittsburg; and director of the natural gas company of West Virginia. He is a fellow of the American association for the advancement of science is a member of the Pittsburg academy of science and art; and of various other institutions. Buchanan, John Alexander, soldier, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Oct. 7, 1843, in Smyth county, Va. He served as a private in the' Stonewall brigade, confederate army; was taken prisoner at Gettysburg in 1863; and remained in prison until 1865. He was a member of the house of delegates of Virginia in 1885-87. In 1889-93 he was a representative from Virginia to the fiftyfirst and fifty-second congresses as a democrat. He is now associate judge of the supreme court of Virginia. Buchanan, John Lee, educator, college president, was born June 19, 1831, in Smyth county, Va. In 1856-78 he was professor of ancient languages at the Emory and Henry college of Virginia; and subsequently was president of that institution of learning. Buchanan, Joseph, inventor, author, was born Aug. 24, 1785, in Washington county, Va. He was a once noted mechanical inventor of Kentucky. He was the author of The Philosophy of Human Nature. He died Sept. 29, 1829, in Louisville,

Buchanan, Joseph Rhodes, physician, journalist, inventor, author, was born Dec. 11, 1814, in Frankfort Ky. He claims to have invented the sciences of sarcognomy and psychometry. He published Buchanan's Journal of Medicine in 1849-56. He was the author of Outlines of Lectures on the Neurological System of Anthropology; Eclectic Practice of Medicine and Surgery; The New Education; Therapeutic Sarcognomy; and Manual of Psychometry. He died Dec. 26, 1898, in San Jose, Cal. Buchanan, McICean, actor, was born Feb. 28, 1823, in Philadelphia, Pa. He was educated for the navy; and served three years as midshipman on the sloop-of-war St. Louis. first appearance as an actor was made at the St. Charles theater of New Orleans in the character of Hamlet; in which role he a ISO made his appearance in New York in 1850. He visited England twice; and also made tours in Australia and California. He died April 16, 1872, in Denver, Col.

He was made captain in 1838; and in the war with Mexico took part in numerous battles.
