He has been the president of the state medical society of Ohio was president of the American institute of homoeopathy in 1891; and was vice-president of the Theosophical society of America. He is the author of Study of Man and the Way to Health; Mystic Masonry; Paracelsus; and other works. Buck, John R., lawyer, congressman, was born on Dec. 6, 1836, in Glastonbury, Conn. He was treasurer of Hartford county from 1863-81; was clerk of the st9,te house of
representatives in 1865; was clerk of the state senate in 1866; was president of the common council of Hartford in 1868; was city attorney in 1871-73; and state senator in 1880-81. In 1881-83 and 1885-87 he was a representative from Connecticut to the forty-seventh and forty-ninth congresses as a republican. Buck, Lefiert Lefierts, soldier, civil engineer, designer, was born in 1837 in Canton, N.Y. In 1861-65 he served in the union army in the sixtieth regiment New York volunteers. He was chief engineer of the New York east river bridge; and was designer and engineer of the arch bridge at Niagara Falls, N. Y.

For many years she has been dramatic critic of the Chicago Daily News; and is probably the most popular dramatic critic in America. Buck, Norman, soldier, lawyer, jurist, was born April 13, 1833, in Lancaster, N.Y. He served in the union army in 1862-65, rising to the rank of captain. In 1865-71 he was judge of ptobate for Winona county, Minn. In 1873 he was elected prosecuting attorney for the same county; in 1878 was appointed United States attorney for the territory of Idaho; and in 1879-92 was an associate justice of the supreme court. Since 1892 he has been superior judge of Spokane county, Wash. In 1895 he was elected commander of the Washington and Alaska grand the republic.

Buck, Samuel Henry, soldier, merchant, lawyer, was born Oct. 9, 1841, in Kentucky, he served throughout the civil war. He resumed the practice of law in New Orleans, La. He then engaged in commerce; and became senior member of the firm of Buck and Pratt in New York City.
Buckalew, Charles Rollin, lawyer, diplomat, congressman. United States senator, was born Dec. 28, 1821, in Columbia county. Pa. He was prosecuting attorney for Columbia county in 1845-47; and was a member of the state senate in 1850-53. He was a presi-

dential elector in 1856; and was again elected to the state senate in 1857. He was appointed minister resident of the United States at the republic of Ecuador, which office he filled for three years. In 1863-69 he was United States senator. He was elected to the state senate in 1869 for the fourth
time; and was the democratic candidate for governor in 1872. He was the author of Proportional Representation; and Constitution of Pennsylvania; and in 1887-91 he was a representative to the fiftieth and fifty-first congresses as a democrat. He died May 19, 1899, in Bloomsburg, Pa. Buckbee, Anna, educator, author, was born June 29, 1855, in Walton, N.Y. In 1881-87 she was superintendent of schools for Potter county, Pa.; and since 1895 he has been a teacher of United States history in the Southwestern state normal school at California, Pa. She is the author of The Fourth School Year. Buckeley, Morgan Gardner, governor, was born Dec. 21, 1837, in East Haddam, Conn. In 1880-88 he was mayor of Hartford, Conn.; and in 1889-93 was governor of the state of Connecticut. Since 1879 he has been president of the Jiitna life insurance company of Hartford, Conn.
Buckham, C. B., congressman, was born in 1831 near Newton, Pa. In 1881 he was elected to the Minnesota state legislature; and since then has served three terms in the state senator. In 1903-07 he was a representative from Minnesota to the fifty-eighth and fifty-ninth congresses as a democrat. Buckham, James, journalist, author, poet, was born Nov. 25, 1858, in Burlington, Vt. He graduated from the universitj' of Vermont, of which institution his father was president. Since 1882 he has been engaged in literary work; and is a member of the Boston authors' club. He is the author of The Heart of Life, a volume of poems; Where Town and Country Meet; Nature Sketches; and A Wayside Altar, a volume of poems.
