mons, with Memoir by S. C. Thacher. He 9, 1812, in Portsmouth, N.H. Buckminster, William, soldier, was born Deo. 15, 1736, in Framingham, Mass. He commanded the minute men in 1774; was lieutenant colonel of Brewer's regiment at Bunker Hill; and received there a wound that crippled hira for life. He died June 22, 1786. Buckminster, William J., journalist, was born in 1813 in Maine. He was a son of the founder of the Massachusetts Ploughman; and was for twenty-one years one of its editors and publishers. He died March 2, 1878, in Maiden, Mass. Buckner, Alexander, United States senator, was born in Indiana. He was a member of the Missouri convention which formed the constitution of that state; and served several years in the state legislature. In 183133 he was United States senator from Missouri. He died June 15, 1833, in St. Louis, Mo.; and was buried on his farm near Jackson, Mo. Buckner, Aylett Hawes, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Dec. 14 1817, in Fredericksburg, Va. Buckner, Aylitt, congressman, was born in Greensburg, Ky. He was a member of the house of representatives of Kentucky in 1842-43. In 1847-49 he was a representative to the thirtieth congress from Kentucky. He died in Kentucky. in 1854
Buckner, Richard A., congressman, was born in 1763 in Virginia. In 1833-29 he was a representative from Kentucky to the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth congresses. He was a presidential elector in 1841. Pie died Dec. 8, 1847, in Greensburg, Ky. Buckner, Simon Bolivar, lawyer, general, governor, was born April 1, 1823, in Hart county, Ky. He graduated from the United States military academy in 1844. He was superintendent of construction of the Chicago custom house in 1855. In 1861 he issued from Russellville and address to the people of Kentucky, calling on them to take up arms against the usurpation of Abraham Lincoln, after which he occupied Bowling Green. He, was made a major-general; and was in the battles of Murfreesboro, Fort Donelson and Chickamauga, and surrendered
with Kirby Smith's army. He was the twenty-eighth governor of Kentucky in 1887-91. lie was a candidate for vice-president of the national democrats in 1896. Budd, Charles Henry, physician, inventor, was born Dec. 8, 1822, in Pemberton, N.J. Possessed of considerable mechanical skill, he constructed scientific instruments; and also devised several processes that have since become of commercial value. He died Oct. 33, 1880, in Philadelphia, Pa. Budd, Henry, lawyer, author, was born Nov. 13, 1849, in Philadelphia, Pa. He is a successful lawyer of Philadelphia, Pa. He is the aiithor of Leading Cases on American LaA- of Real Property; and of various Law Reports. Budd, James Herbert, lawyer, congressman, governor, was born May 18, 1851, in Janesville, Wis. He was a member of the governor's staff in 1875-79; and served as United States commissioner for several years. In 1883-85 ha was a representative from California to the forty-eighth congress as a democrat. He was the eighteenth governor of California in 1895-99. He died in 1902 in Stockton, Cal.
Budd, Otho William, soldier, was born in Pennsylvania. He is a retired captain United States army; and resides in San Antonio. Buddington, Sidney Ozias, arctic explorer, was born Sept. 16, 1823 in Groton, Conn. In 1860 he commanded the whaler George Henry, in which Charles Francis Hall sailed to the arctic region; and he was also sailingmaster of the Polaris in the expedition of 1871. He died June 13, 1888, in Conn. Buddington, William Ives, clergyman, author, was born April 25, 1815, in New Haven, Conn. In 1854-79 he was pastor of the Clinton avenue congregational church of Brooklyn. He was the author of Patriotism and the Pulpit; and other addresses. He died Nov. 29, 1879, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Buehler, Huber Gray, clergyman, educator, author, was born Dec. 3, 1864, in Gettysburg, Pa. He is a teacher at Hotchkiss school of Lakeville, Conn. He is the author of Practical Exercises in English. Buehler, William George, naval officer, was born March 25, 1837, in Philadelphia, Pa. During the civil war he became chief engineer; and served in the North Atlantic and AVest gulf squadrons. He attained the rank of rear-admiral in the United States navy;
and retired from active service
in 1899. Buehrle, Robert Koch, educator, author, was born Sept. 24, 1840, in Germany. He was superintendent of the schools of Allentown, Reading and Lancaster, Pa. He is the author of a work entitled. Grammatical Praxis; and Arithmetical Exercises. Buel, Alexander Hamilton, merchant, con-
