second crop songs. He died May 11, 1895, in Nutley, N.J. Bunner, Rudolph, congressman, was born in 1779. In 1827-29 he was a representative from New York to the twenty-eighth congress. He died July 23, 1837, in Otsego, N.Y. Bunting, Thomas L., merchant, banker, congressman, was born in 1844 in Eden, N.Y. He was president of the New York packers' association; and state president of the national packers' association. He was president of the Hamburg water and electric light company; and was a member of the Erie county farmers' institute. In 1891-93 he was a representative from New York to the flftysecond congress as a democrat. He died Dec. 27, 1898, in Buffalo, N.Y. Burbank, Elbridge Ayer, sculptor, artist, was born Aug. 10, 1858, in Harvard, 111. He made a specialty of portraits of Indians; and has painted Red Cloud of the Sioux; Joseph of the Nez Perces; Geronimo of the Apaches; and many others.

founder, was born Aug. 20, 1822, in Hanover, Pa. He participated in the Kansas troubles in 1857 with Lane, John Brown and others; and was one of the original founders of Palls City, Neb. He was instrumental in passing the bill to abolish slavery in the territory of Nebraska in 1859; and served as paymaster in 1863. He was appointed in the regular army and served on the frontier during the
war, retiring through disability in 1875. also served as member of the Nebraska state legislature. Burbank, James Brattle, soldier, was born g'ept. 11, 1838, in Hartford, Conn. He served through the civil war; and in 1866 attained the rank of first lieutenant. In 1904 he was retired with the rank of brigadier-general. Burbank, John A., territorial governor. In 1869-74 he was territorial governor of Dakota. He died in 1905. Burbank, Sidney, soldier, was born Sept. 26, 1807, in Massachusetts. In 1836-39 he was instructor of military tactics in the military academy. During the civil war he was present at the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg; and for his services received the brevet of brigadier-general. In 1867-69 he was commander of the district of Kentucky; and in 1869-70 was superintendent of the general re-recruiting service. He died Dec.

Burbeck, Henry, soldier, was born June 8, 1754, in Boston, Mass. He served as major in the revolutionary war; and attained the rank of brigadier-general in the war of 1812. He died Oct. 2, 1848, in New London, Conn. Burbridge, Stephen Gano, soldier, lawyer, was born Aug. 19, 1831, in Scott county, Ky. He was conspicious at the capture of Port Gibson and was among the first to enter the place. Later he was placed in command of
the military district of Kentucky; and defeated General John H. Morgan on his raid, driving him into Tennessee. For this service he received the thanks of President Lincoln; and in 1864 was brevetted major-general. Burch, John Chilton, lawyer, legislator, congressman, was born on Feb. 1, 1826, in Boone county. Mo. He studied law; in 185556 was deputy county clerk of Cole county, JIo.; and in 1857 was assistant enrolling clerk in the state senate. He was military secretary to Governor John C. Edwards. In 1850 he moved to California; in 1856 was a representative from Trinity county to the state legislature; and in 1857-59 was a member of the state senate. In 1859-61 he was a representative from California to the thirtysixth congress as a democrat. He then resumed the practice of law in San Francisco; and for four years was code commissioner. He died Aug. 31, 1883, in San Francisco, Cal. Burch, Rousseau Angelus, lawyer, jurist, was born Aug. 4, 1862, in Williamsport, Ind. In 1885 he began the practice of law in Topeka, Kan. Since ]902 he has been an associate justice of the supreme court of Kansas.
Burchard, Horatio Chapin, lawyer, governofficial, congressman, was born Sept. 23, 1825, in Marshall, N.Y. He was a member of the Illinois state legislature in 1862-66; and 1867-79 he was a representative from Illinois to the forty-first, forty -second, fortythird, forty-fourth and forty-fifth congresses. He was director of. the United States mint in 1879-85; and in 1885-86 was revenue commissioner for the state of Illinois. He died May 14, 1908, in Freeport, 111.
