Burrowes, Peter Edward, journalist, author, was born in 1844 in Ireland. He came to the United States in 1885. He is a lecturer, essayist and poet. He is the author of
The Crime of Euby Roohford; and Revolutionary Essays.

cator, publisher, author, was born in 1805 in Pennsylvania. In 1831 he was elected to the Pennsylvania state legislature; and in 1835 was appointed secretary of the com-
monwealth. He became known as the father of Pennsylvania common schools; and in 1860-63 was state superintendent of public instruction. In 1853-70 he edited and published the Pennsylvania School Journal. He was the author of Pennsylvania School Architecture. He died in 1871 in Pennsylvania. Burrows, Daniel, congressman, was born in Groton, Conn. In 1821-33 he was a representative from Connecticut to the seventeenth congress. The commander of the brig Enterprise, who fought off the coast of Maine in 1813, was named Burrows. He died in Connecticut.
Burrows, Joseph H., farmer, clergyman, congressman, was born May 15, 1840, in Manchester, England. He was educated in the high schools of Keokuk, Iowa; and he studied two years in Quincy, 111. He was engaged in mercantile pursuits in Keokuk
and Centerville, Iowa; and for thirty years was connected with the Modern West Fork

ordained to the baptist ministry; and for over thirty years has been pastor in Cainsville, Mo. In 1883 he was one of the organizers of Cainsville bank, of which he was vice-president. He has attained note as a public speaker and temperance lecturer. In 1870-74 and in 1878-80 he was a representative to the Missouri state legislature. In 1881-83 he was a representative from Missouri to the forty-seventh congress. Burrows, Julius Caesar, soldier, lawyer, congressman. United States senator, was born Jan. 9, 1837, in North East, Pa. In 1863-64 he was an officer in the union army; and in 1865-67 was prosecuting attorney of Kalamazoo, Mich. In 1873-75, 1879-83 and 1885-95 he was a representative from Michigan to the forty-third, forty-sixth, fortyseventh, forty-ninth, fiftieth, fifty-first, fifty-second and fifty-third congresses as a republican. He was a United States senator in 1895-99, to fill a vacancy; and was re-elected for the terms of 1899-1905 and 1905-11. -v^as

In 1885 he was engaged in the reorganization of the salvation army; and subsequently devoted himself to socialist propaganda in Brooklyn, N.Y. He is the author of The Crime of Ruby Roehford; and Revolutionary Essays. Burrus, John Houstpn, educator, lawyer, college president, was born Feb. 23, 1849, near Murfreesboro, Tenn. He is a noted lawyer of Nashville, Tenn.; in 1877-79 was an instructor in the Fisk university; and in 1883-93 was president of the Ahorn A. and M. college at Rodney, Miss. Burry, John, electrician, inventor, was born in 1861 in Switzerland. In 1880 he came to the United States; made a specialty of printing-telegrapHy ; and he was esteemed a great expert. About twenty years ago he installed the printing-telegraph plants in Rio Janeiro and Buenos Ayres; and in 1893 associated himself with the Stock quotation telegraph company of New York City. He died

Burson, William Worth, manufacturer, inventor, was born Sept. 23, 1833, in Venango county, Pa. He has worked mainly on grain binders, harvesters and automatic knitting machines; and has taken out about fifty patents. He is president of the Burson manufacturing company; and vice-president of the Burson knitting company. Burt, Andrew Sheridan, soldier, was born Nov. 31, 1839, in Ohio. In 1861 he entered the United States volunteers as a private in the sixth regiment Ohio infantry; became lieutenant in the United States army; and passed through various grades to brigadiergeneral in 1903. During the Spanish-American war he commanded the first brigade of the first division of the first army corps; subsequently the first brigade of the second division of the seventh army -corps. He was mustered out as brigadier-general of volunters; and went to the Philippines in command of the twenty-fifth United States infantry. There he commanded the Province of Zambeeles until his promotion to brigadier-general. Burt, Armistead, lawyer, congressman, was born Nov. 16, 1803, in Edgefield, S.C. In 1828 he moved to Abbeville, S.C; and practiced law there until 1883. In 1843-53 he was a representative from South Carolina to the twenty-eighth to the thirty-second congresses; and during a part of the thirtieth congress ofBciated as speaker of the house of representatives. He was a delegate to the New York convention of 1868. He died October 30, 1888, in Abbeville, S.C. Burt, Charles, engraver, artist, was bom Nov. 8, 1833, in Scotland. He worked sixteen years for the American bank note company of New York City; and for twenty years was chief engraver of the United States treasury department. He has engraved postage stamp plates for Italy, Russia, Brazil, Chili, Canada and other countries.
