In 1861-65 he served as a colonel in the civil war in the South Carolina artillery in the confederate service. Butler, William Cathcart, soldier, was born in New Jersey. In 1876 he graduated from the United States military academy; and was made second lieutenant in the third regiment United States infantry. In 1885 he became first lieutenant; was made captain in 1895; became major in 1901; and is now lieutenant-colonel in the ninth infantry. Butler, William Morris, physician, surgeon, author, was born March 26, 1850, in Maine, N.Y. He was educated at the Cortland academy of Homer, N.Y.;

and graduated from Hamilton college. He graduated in medicine

from the college of physicians and surgeons of New York City; and attended a college of medicine in Paris, France. He has been New York state examiner; professor of mental diseases at the

New York Homoeopathic college ; and physician to the Middletown state hospital. He has a large practice in

New York City; and is consulting neurologist to the Memorial hospital and Infants' hospital of Brooklyn, N.Y. He has been president of the Orange county homoeopathic society; president of the Kings county homoeopathic society; and president of the New York state homoeopathic society. He is the author of Home Care for the Insane. Butler, William Orlando, soldier, congressman, poet, was bom in 1793 in Jessamine county, Ky. He enlisted as a soldier in the war of 1813. In 183943 he was a representative from Kentucky to the twenty-sixth and to twenty- seventh congresses. During the Brooklyn and

war with Mexico he obtained such distinction that he was promoted to the position of major-general in the regular army; and a sword was voted to him by congress. In 1848 he was the demoeratice candidate for vice-president, on the ticket with Lewis Cass for president. He was the author of many fugitive pieces of poetry, and one, entitled The Boat Horn, attained great popularity. He died in Kentucky. Butler, William, N., lawyer, jurist, was bom Aug. 16, 1856, in Berlin, Wis. He was educated at the university of Illinois; attended the Union college of law at Chicago,

and also the Albany law school of New York. He soon attained success at the bar; has been states attorney and corporation counsel for the city of Cairo, 111. He is judge of the first judicial circuit of Illinois for the counties of Alexander, Pulaski, Massac, Pope, Johnson, Union, Jackson, Williamson and Saline for the term of 1903-09. Butler, Zebulon, soldier, was born in 1731 in Lyme, Conn. In 1769 he settled at Wyoming, Pa. In the early part of the revolutionary war he was a lieutenant-colonel in the Connecticut line; became colonel in 1778; and commanded the weak garrison at Wyoming at the time of the massacre, which he was unable to prevent. He accompanied Sullivan in his Indian expedition in 1779. He died July 38, 1795 in Wilkesbarre, Pa. Butman, Samuel, congressman, United States senator, was born in Massachusetts. He was a member of the Maine legislature in 1822, 1826 and 1827; and in 1827-27 was a representative from Maine to the twentieth congress. In 1853 he was again elected to the state legislature; and made president of tne state senate. He died in 1864 in Maine. Butt, Archibald Willingham, soldier, was born in Georgia. In 1901 he was captain and quartermaster United States army; and is now captain the quartermaster's department at Havana, Cuba. Butt, Cyrus M., soldier, farmer, lawyer, jurist, was born Sept. 30, 1833 in Morgan county, Ohio. He became a lieutenant-colonel in the civil war. He is a prominent lawyer in Viroqua, Wis.; was been district attorney for six years; was state senator for two years; was county judge for twelve years; and for the past twenty-five years has been a member of the the board of education. In 1893'he was the people's party candidate for governor of Wisconsin, and for congress in 1894. He has served as president of the farmer's alliance of Wisconsin since its organization, excepting the first term. Butterfield, Arthur Dexter, educator, civil engineer, scientist, was born Oct. 13, 1870, in Dunstable, Mass. He graduated from Worcester university with the degrees of D.S. and M.S.; and received the degree of A.M. from Columbia university. Since 1904 he has been professor of mechanics and mathematics in the university of Vermont. In 189598 and 1903 he was assistant in the state surveys of Massachusetts; and in 1904-05 was chief of the field party in the United States geological survey. He has made valu111.;

able researches in geology. Butterfield, Charles Henry, lawyer, jurist, was born May, 1833, in Farmington, Maine. During the civil war he served under the commission of major, and then was lieutenant-colonel in an Indiana regiment. He held the oflSee of judge of the Vanderburg county circuit court; was mayor of Evansville. He died about 1904 in Evansville, Ind.
