For several years he was mayor or Statesville,

N.C; and

various other positions of trust and honor in his native city. He subsequently became a successful publisher of Charlotte, N.C. has been a director of the state hospital at Mor;

dent of the board. In 1892 he was chairman of the North Carolina delegation to the national democratic convention and is a prominent member of the democratic party. He is the editor and publisher of the Daily Observer of Charlotte, N.C; and has contributed extensively to American literature. Caldwell, Joshua William, lawyer, author, was born Feb. 3, 1856, in Athens, Tenn. He is the author of Constitutional History of Tennessee; and Bench and Bar of Tennessee. Caldwell, Lisle Bones, clergyman, educator, author, was bom Jan. 10, 1834, in Wilna, N.Y. He is a methodist clergyman and educator of Tennessee. He is the author of

Wines of Palestine, or The Bible Defended; and Beyond the Grave. Caldwell, Merritt, educator, author, was born Nov. 29, 1806, in Hebron, Maine. He was a professor of metaphysics at Dickinson college in 1837-48. He was the author of The Doctrine of the English Verb; Manual of Elocution; Philosophy of Christian Perfection and Christianity Tested by Eminent Men. He died June 6, 1848, in Portland, Maine. Caldwell, Robert P., lawyer, soldier, congressman, was born Dec. 16, 1821, in Adair county, Ky. He was elected to the state legislature of Tennessee in 1847; and to the state senate in 1855. He was elected attorney-general to the six;

teenth judicial circuit of Tennessee in 1858.

He is the author of Laboratory and Field Manual of Botany; and Plant Morphology. Caldwell, Patrick C, congressman, was born in South Carolina. In 1841-43 he was a representative from South Carolina to the twenty-seventh congress. He died in South Carolina. Caldwell, Samuel Lunt, clergyman, college president, author, was born Nov. 13, 1830, in Newburyport, Mass. In 1878-85 he was president of Vassar college. He was the author of Cities of Our Faith and Other Discourses and Addresses. He died Sept. 26, 1889, in Providence, R.I. Caldwell, Tod R., lawyer, state senator, governor, was born in 1818 in Morgantown, N.C He served in the North Carolina state legislature in 1843-44; was a state senator in 1850; lieutenant-governor in 1868; and in 1873-74 was the thirty-first governor of North Carolina. He died July 11, 1874, in Hillsborough, N.C. Caldwell, W. C, lawyer, jurist. He is an associate justice of the supreme court of Tennessee. He has had considerable experience as a judge; and has held positions where the regular judges were under disabilities.
