Calef, Robert, merchant, author, was born in 1648 in Massachusetts. He was the author of More Wonders of the Invisible World, a satirical reply to Cotton Mather's Wonders of the Invisible World. Its line of argument was in direct opposition to the witchcraft
persecutions;

burnt by Increase Mather in the grounds of Harvard college. He died in 1719 in Boston, Mass. Calhoun, Abner Wellborn, physician, college president, was born April 16, 1845, in Newnan, Ga. He has made a specialty of the diseases of the eye and ear. In 1868 he became professor of opthalmology and otology in the Atlanta medical college; and is now president of the college of physicians and surgeons of Atlanta, Ga. Calhoun, Edmund Rose, naval officer, was born May 6, 1821, in Chambersburg, Pa. He was appointed midshipman in 1869; was promoted commodore in 1876; and rear-admiral in 1882. He died Feb. 17, 1897, in Washington, D.C. Calhoun, James Edward, capitalist, soldier, was born in 1798 in Abbeville, S.C. He became occupied with planting and interests in land; and accumulated twenty-five thousand acres in Abbeville county, S.C, and Washington county, Ga., extending on both sides

For many years he was a circuit judge; in 1820-21 was a, member of the Kentucky state legislature from Ohio county; and in 1829, 1830 and 1840 from Breckenridge county. In 1835-37 he was a representative from Kentucky to the twenty-fourth congress. The county seat of MoLean county was named for him in 1852. He died in Kentucky. He was a noted South Carolina statesman; in 1811-17 he «as a, representative from South Carolina to the twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth congresses. In 1817-25 he was secretary of war; and in 1844-45 he was secretary of state. In 183533 he was vice-president under John Quincy Adams; and in 1831-51 he was United States senator.
