in 1831 in Pennsylvania. He received the brevet of brigadier-general durine the civil war. He began practicing law in Louisiana, where he was appointed a United States court judge. He removed to what was then Dakota territory in 1877; and held the office of United States district attorney for some time; served as delegate to many conventions; and was at the head of the movements for division of the territory into North and South Dakota and for admission into the union. Throughout Dakota he was known as the father of statehood. He died April 19, 1898, in Yankton, S.D. Campbell, Jabez Pitt, clergyman, bishop, was born Feb. 6, 1815, in Slaughter's Neck, Del. He was elected a bishop in 1864; and became presiding bishop of the third district of the African methodist episcopal church. He died Aug. 9, 1891, in Philadelphia, Pa. Campbell, Jacob Miller, soldier, congressman, was born Nov. 20, 1831, in Somerset county. Pa. He was a delegate to the first republican convention in 1856. He served in the union army in 1861-65, rising to the rank of brevet brigadier-general. He was surveyor-general of Pennsylvania in 186571. In 1877-79 and in 1881-87 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the fortyfifth, forty-seventh, forty-eighth and fortyninth congresses as a republican. He died Sept. 27, 1888, in Johnstown, Pa. jurist,

Campbell, James, lawyer, jurist, cabinet was born in 1813 in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1842-50 he was a judge of common pleas. In 1852 he was made attorney-general for the state; and in 1853-57 he was postmaster-general. He died Jan. 27, 1893, in Philadelphia, Pa. ' ofiicer,

director of the Louisiana purchase exposition company ; and is vice-president of the Wagner electric manufacturing company of St. Louis, Mo. Campbell, James A., governor. In 1869-75 he was governor of the territory of Wyoming.

Campbell, James Alexander, physician and author, was bom Jan. 12, 1847, Platteville, Wis. He was professor of ophthalmology and otology in the Home medical college of Missouri for thirty-five years. When the Children's free hospital of St. Louis was founded in 1879, he was appointed a member of its staff of physicians. Campbell, James Baxter, lawyer, state senator, was born Oct. 27, 1808, in Oxford, Mass. For many years he served in the South Carolina state legislature. When the civil war began in 1861, although believing in the right of secession he opposed the tiring on Fort Sumter and other acts that tended toward separation. In 1866 he was elected to the United States senate by the provisional legislature, but he was excluded with other southern members. In 1877 he was elected to the state senate. He died Nov. 8, 1883, in Washington, D.C. oculist,

Campbell, James Daniels, soldier, lawyer, public ofl!icial, was born on Jan. 14, 1839, in Bridgewater, Pa. In 1859-61 he practiced law ill Huntingdon, Pa. He served in the civil war as second lieutenant and captain. In 186466 he was district attorney for Huntingdon county. Pa. ; and then took up the practice ot law in Davenport, Iowa. For fourteen years he was assistant and city solicitor of Davenport, Iowa; and was general attorney for the Davenport and St. Paul railroad company. Since 1890 he has been general solicitor of the Philadelphia and Reading railroad system. CampbeU, James £., lawyer, congressman, governor, was born July 17, 1843, in Middletown. Ohio. He served in the United States navy during the civil war; and was prosecuting attorney of Butler county in 1876-80. In 1885-89 he was a representative from Ohio to the forty-ninth and fiftieth congresses as a democrat. In 1892 he was the thirty-fifth governor of Ohio. Campbell, James H., lawyer, diplomat, congressman, was born Feb. 8, 1820, in Williamsport, Pa. He was a member of the whig convention at Baltimore. In 1855-57 and 1859-63 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the thirty-fourth, thirtysixth and thirty-seventh congresses. In 1864 was appointed minister resident to Sweden; and in 1866 was made minister to Bogota. He died April 12, 1895, in Wayne, Pa. Campbell, James M., clergyman, theologian, author, was born May 5, 1840, in Scotland. He has been a lecturer on biblical themes. He is the author of Clerical Types; Unto the Uttermost ; The Indwelling Christ and Bible Questions. Campbell, James Romulus, soldier, lawyer, journalist, congressman, was born May 4, 1853, in Hamilton county, 111. In 1878 he purchased the Times of MoLeansboro, 111.,

He was a member

of the Illinois house of representatives in 1884-88; and of the state senate in 1888-96.

In 1897-99 he was a representative from Illinois to the fifty-fifth congress as a democrat. During the Spanish-American war he attained the rank of brigadier-general. Campbell, James Valentine, jurist, author, was born Feb. 25, 1823, in Buffalo, N.Y. In 1858-90 he was an associate justice of the supreme court of Michigan and chief justice in 1870-72, 1879-80 and 1885-87. For twenty-five years he held a chair in the law department of the university of Michigan. He was the author of Outlines of the Political History of Michigan. He died March 26, 1890, in Detroit, Mich. Campbell, Jesse H., clergyman, author, was bom Feb. 10, 1807, in Mcintosh county, Ga. He was one of the most laborious and useful preachers in his native state. He was the author of Georgia Baptists, Historical and Biographical. He died in Georgia.
