Campbell, Jolm, journalist, publisher, jurwas born in 1653 in Scotland. He was a Boston bookseller and in 1704 issued the Boston News Letter, the first permanent newspaper published in North America. He was postmaster of Boston for many years ending with 1718; and was for several years justice of the peace for Suffolk county. He died in March, 1728, in Boston, Mass. Campbell, John, congressman, was born in South Carolina. In 1829-31 and 1837-45 he was a representative from South Carolina to the twenty-flrst and the twenty-fifth, twenty-sixth, twenty-seventh and twentyeighth congresses. In 1885 he was a member of the general assembly of Colorado; and in 1887 was a member of the state senate. In 1895-1904 he was chief justice of the

supreme court of Colorado. Campbell, John Allen, soldier, governor, was born Oct. 8, 1835, in Salem, Ohio. He was promoted to brigadier-general for courage in the field and marked ability and fidelity at Kich Mountain, Shiloh, Perryville, Murfreesborough and through the Atlanta campaign. In 1866 he became assistant editor of the Cleveland Daily Leader. He was appointed in the regular army and made a lieutenant-colonel; and served as adjutant on the staff of General Sohofield. In 1869 he was appointed the first governor of the territory of Wyoming; and was reappointed in 1873. He died July 14, 1880, in Washington, D.C.
