of Washington, D.C. Ailshie, James Franklin, educator, lawyer, jurist, was born June 19, 1868, in Green
county, Tenn. For two terms he was regent of Idaho state university. Since 1903 he has been associate justice of the state supreme court of Idaho. Ainslie, George, lawyer, congressman, was born Oct. 30, 1838, near Boonville, Mo. In 1862 he settled in that portion of Washington territory which now constitutes the territory of Idaho served in the territorial legislature; and was president of the council during one session. He was editor of a news;
paper in 1869-73; and was district attorney in 1874. In 1879-83 he was a delegate from Idaho to the forty-sixth and forty-seventh congresses as a, democrat. Ainslie, Hew, author, poet, was born in 1792 in Scotland. He was a Scottish poet who emigrated to America in 1822 and lived mainly in Kentucky. He was the author of Pilgrimage to the Land of Bums, a prose work with lyrics interspersed; and Scottish Songs, Ballads and Poems. He died in 1878. Ainslie, James Stuart, clergyman, founder, was born May 6, 1856, in Burlington, N.Y. He was educated at Cornell university; and at Yale theological seminary. He was the founder and for eight years in 1882-90 was pastor of the First congregational church of Ogdensburg, N.Y.; and was the builder and for ten years in 1890-1900 was pastor of the Plymouth congregational church of Fort Wayne, Ind. In 1879-88 he was district attorney for Jackson county. Wis. In 1888 he resigned that position; and took up the practice of law in Phoenix, Ariz. In 18981903 he was attorney -general of Arizona; when he resigned. Ainsworth, Danforth E., lawyer, statesman, was born Nov. 29, 1848, in Clayton, N.Y. In 1873 he began the practice of law
Sandy Hill, N.Y.; and in 1886-89 and 1893-95 was a representative to the New York state legislature. In 1895-1904 he was deputy state superintendent of public instruction for New York. Ainsworth, Frank Beveridge, soldier, reformer, was born Aug. 11, 1841, in Lisbon, N.Y. During the civil war he was aide-decamp, quartermaster, adjutant, and finally provost marshal in the defenses of Washington. In 1870 he was a delegate from the state of Indiana to the international congress on penitentiary and reformatory discipline at Cincinnati, Ohio; and in 1867-77 was superintendent of the Indiana house of refuge. He was the author of the mark system; was a director of the United States prison congress; and participated in the international prison congress of 1870. For the past twenty years he has been engaged in insurance; is considered an authority on policy contracts; and is now secretary and general manager of the Bankers' reserve fund life insurance company of Cincinnati, Ohio. Ainsworth, Franklin, F., publisher, founder, was born Sept. 5, 1856, in Boston, Mass. In 1873 he began business with Potter, Ainsworth and company, publishers and remained with that firm until its consolidation with A. S.
