He was educated in the public schools of his native county; and at the Centennial academy. He is a successful farmer and merchant of Ainsworth, near Wesson, Miss.; and is president of Copiah county Sunday-school organization. In 18961900 he was a representative to the Mississippi state legislature ; served on several im-

portant committees; and has filled various other positions of trust and honor. Ainsworth, Lahan, clergyman, was born July 19, 1757, in Woodstock, Conn. He was pastor of the church at Jaffrey in 1782-1858, which is probably the longest pastorate on record.

In 1855 he removed to West Union, Iowa; and was a member of the lower house and state senate for several years. In 1875-77 he was a representative from Iowa to the forty-fourth congress. He entered the union army in 1862 as captain in the sixth regiment Iowa cavalry; and served for three years against the Indians in

Among his important works are the McKinley monument at Golden Gate park; and the Bret Harte monument in San Francisco, Cal. Alton, George Briggs, educator, author, was born June 15, 1856, in Nicollet county, Minn. Since 1874 he has been engaged in educational work; and since 1893 has been state inspector of high schools of Minnesota. He is the author of The Descriptive Speller; and other works. Aked, Charles Frederick, clergyman, author, was born Aug. 27, 1864, in Nottingham, England. He was educated at Lee's commercial school, at Midland baptist college, and at the university college

Akeley, Healy Cady, soldier, lumber merchant, was born March 16, 1836, in Stowe, Vt. He was educated in the local schools. He began life as a farmer and surveyor; and later became a lawyer. In 1863 he enlisted in the second Michigan cavalry as a private; and was mustered out in 1865 as adjutant of the regiment. In 1872 he went into the manufacture of lumber in Grand Haven, Mich., and continued therein until removal to Minneapolis in 1887. He was mayor of Grand Haven two terms; and in 1866-81 was collector of customs for the district of Michigan. He is president of the H. C. Akeley lumber company of Minneapolis of the Itasca lumber company ; and of the Flour city national bank and the Metropolitan trust company. Aker, Leonard, farmer, soldier, legislator, was born in 1841 in Ravenna, Ohio. He was
