In 1845 he was elected judge of probate coiirt and state's attorney in Windham county. Conn.; in 185758 was a member of the state senate; in 1861 was judge of the superior court; and in 1866 was judge of the supreme bench of Connecticut.

Carpenter, Francis M., banker, state senator, was born July 10, 1834, in New Castle, N.Y. He was educated in the public schools of his native state; and attended the union academy of Bedford, N.Y. For thirty-two years he was supervisor of New Castle, N.Y. for six years was county treasvirer; and is now serving his second term as a member of the New York state senate. He has been vice-president of the Watkins national bank; vice-president of the Westchester trust company; director of the White Plains national bank; and is now vice-president and treasurer of the Westchester title mortgage company of White Plains, N.Y. Carpenter, Francis W^od, merchant, manufacturer, was born June 34, 1831, in Seekonk, Mass. He is president of the Congo and Carpenter company; and of the Rhode Island Perkins horseshoe company. He is also president of the American national bank. Carpenter, Frank George, journalist, traveler, author, was bom May 8,1855, in Mansfield, Ohio. In 1888-89 he made a trip round the world for a newspaper syndicate and Cosmopolitan Magazine; and in 1891 made a newspaper tour to Mexico; then to Russia, Germany and England in 1893 ; and to China, Japan and Java in 1894. He spent 1898 in South America; and in 1900 traveled in the Philippines, China, Java, Australia and New Zealand. He is the author of Through Asia with the Children; Through North America with the Children; and South America. Carpenter, Frank Oliver, educator, lawyer, author, was bom March 33, 1859, in Milford, Mass. He is the author of French Grammar for the High Schools; and Floods and Their Uses.

He is a member of the leading medical associations; and has filled the office of postmaster for two terms. He now only gives half of the year to his general practice, spending the balance in travel. He is now engaged in writing a work on Medical Reform Subjects. Carpenter, George Moulton, lawyer, jurist, was born April S3, 1844, in Portsmouth, R.I. He was appointed one of a board of commissioners to revise the laws of Rhode Island in 1883. He was an associate justice of the supreme court of the state in 1883-85 and was United States district judge for the district of Rhode Island in 1884-96. He died July 31, 1896, in Holland.

During the civil war in 1861-66 he was in the eighteenth regiment United States infantry; and was brevetted captain for gallantry at the battle of Stone River. He served in Indian campaigns; was major of the fourth regiment United States infantry; and lieutenant colonel in the seventh infantry.
