Carpenter, Henry Otis, banker, statesman, was born Jan. 30, 1852, in Walpole, N.H. He was educated in the public and the private schools of Rutland, Vt. He has been vicepresident of the Rutland savings bank; for many years was interested in various business enterprises and corporations of Vermont; and has now retired from active business. He has been president of Rutland city; and in 1898 was a representative in the Vermont state legislature. In 1905-06 he was a, member of the Vermont state senate from Rutland county.
Carpenter, James Edward, soldier, lawyer, author, was born March 6, 1841, in Kent county, Md. He participated in the campaigns of the army of the Potomac until his discharge in 1864, having attained the rank of captain in 1863. He received the brevet of major in 1865. After the civil war he studied law; and was admitted to the bar in Philadelphia, Pa. He is the author of List of the Battles, Engagements, Actions and Important Skirmishes in which the eighth Pennsylvania Cavalry Participated During the War of 1861-65.

Carpenter, John Thomas, surgeon, was born June 27, 1833, in Pottsville, Pa. At the opening of the civil war he was commissioned surgeon of the thirty-fourth regiment Pennsylvania volunteers; in 1863 became president of the army medical board at Cincinnati. Ohio; and in 1864 became medical inspector and superintendent of hospitals in the district of Kentucky. At the close of the civil war he settled in the practice of his profession at Pottsville, Pa.

Carpenter, Lewis Cass, journalist, congressman, was born Feb. 20, 1836, in Putnam Conn. In 1868 he assisted in establishing the first daily paper in South Carolina, the Charleston Republican; and established The Daily Union in 1870. In 1873-75 he was a representative from South Carolina to the forty-third congress to fill a vacancy. He died 1908 in South Carolina. Carpenter, Louis Henry, soldier, was bom Feb. 11, 1839, in Glasaboro, N.J. He served army of the Potomac; was aide to General Sheridan; and colonel of volunteers in 1865. He remained in the regular army as captain of the tenth regiment United States cavalry; he participated in numerous campaigns; and he received six brevets and a medal of honor. In 1899 he became brigadier-general of volunteers. He served in the
