In 1873 he was a member of the Minnesota state legislature; in 1892-96 was postmaster of St. Paul; and in 1872-75 was commander of the department of Minnesota grand army of the republic. In 1897-1904 he was auditor of the United States postoffice department. He is the autnor of The ArmyMule; and other Sketches. Castle, James N., lawyer, state senator, congressman, was born May 33, 1836, in Canada. He was elected district attorney and located in Stillwater, Minn. He was a member of the state senate in 1868 ; and re-elected in 1878 and 1882, serving in all ten years, in 1891-93 he was a representative from Minnesota to the fifty-second congress as a democrat. He died Jan. 2, 1902, in Stillwater,

Castle, Nicholas, clergyman, bishop, author, was born Oct. 4, 1837, in Bristol, Ind. In 1877 he became a bishop in the United brethren church; and since 1905 has been emeritus. He is the author of The Witness ot the Holy Spirit. Castle, William Ernest, educator, scientist, was born Oct. 25, 1867, in Alexandria, Ohio. Since 1903 he has ben assistant professor of zoology in Harvard university. He is a fellow of the American association for the advancement of science.

Castleman, John Breckiniidge, soldier, was born in Kentucky. In 1898 he was colonel in the first regiment Kentucky volunteers; and in 1899 attained the rank of brigadier-general of volunteers.

Caswall, Henry, clergyman, author, was born in 1810 in England. He was an episcopal clergyman of English birth, but ordained in the United States, where the most of his life was spent. He was the author of An Epitome of the History of the American Episcopal Church; Didascalus, or The Teacher; Mormoniam and its Author; The Jerusalem Chamber, or Convocation and its Possibilities; The Calif omian Crusoe, a Tale of

Mormonism; Scotland and the Scottish Church; The Western World Eevised; The Martyr of the Pongas; and The American Church and the American Union. He died Dec. 17, 1870, in Franklin, Pa. Caswell, Alexis, clergyman, lecturer, college president, author, was bom in 1799 in Taunton, Mass. For thirty-five years he was a professor at Brown university; and its president in 1868-73. He lectured on Astronomy; and was the author of Meteorological Observations. He died Jan. 8, 1877, in Providence, R.I. Caswell, Edward Thompson, physician, author, was bom Sept. 11, 1833, in Providence, R.I. During the civil war he served as United States contract surgeon and examining for recruits. He was president of the American academy of medicine. He is the author of La^goscopy and Rhinoscopy. He died April 17, 1887, in Providence, R.I. Caswell, Richard, soldier, state senator, governor, was born Aug. 3, 1739, in Mary-

land. In 1754-71 he was a member of the colonial assembly. He commanded the right wing of Tyron's forces at the battle of Allamance in 1771; and in 1774-76 he was a del-

egate from North Carolina to the continental congress; in 1775 was president of the provincial congress which framed the constitution of the state, and was first governor of North Carolina under it, holding that office in 1777-80 and 1785-88. In 1780 he led the North Carolina troops in the battle of Camden; In 1782 he was speaker of the senate, and comptroller-general, performing the duties of both offices until 1784. In 1787 he was a delegate to the convention for framing the federal constitution; in 1789 was elected state senator; and was a member of the convention which ratified the constitution. He died Nov. 20, 1789, in Fayetteville.

Caswell, Lucien B., lawyer, state legislator, congressman, was born Nov. 27, 1827, in Swanton, Vt. In 1855 he was district attorney; a delegate to the republican convention of 1868; and a member of the Wisconsin legislature in 1863, in 1873 and in 1874. In 1875-83 and in 1885-91 he was a representative from Wisconsin to the forty-fourth to the forty-seventh and the forty-ninth, the fiftieth and the fifty-first congresses as a republican, and was on several important committees. He resides in Atkinson, Wis. Caswell, Thomas Hubbard, lawyer, author, was bora in Exeter, N.Y., Aug 10, 1825. He was judge for eight years of Nevada county, Cal.; and moved to San Francisco in 1878.
