served during the civil Vermont volunteers. Since 1870 he has been engaged in mining. He is the author of Yellow Pine Basin. Catlin, Isaac Swartwood, soldier, was bom in New York. In 1861 he was a captain in the third regiment New York infantry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. Cato, Sterling G., lawyer, jurist, was born He removed to Alabama, from which state he was appointed an associate justice of the United States court for the territory of Kansas. Caton, Richard, merchant, geologist, founder, was born in England in 1763. He became a merchant in Baltimore; and in 1790 entered into an association for the manufacture of cotton. He was one of the founders in 1795 of the library company, whose collection was merged in the library of the Maryland historical society. He died May 19, 1845, in Baltimore, Md. Catron, John, lawyer, jurist, was born in 1786 in Wythe county, Va. In 1818 he moved to Nashville, Tenn. ; and soon attained high rank as a chancery lawyer. In 1824 he was appointed one of the judges of the supreme court of the state; and in 1837-65 was an associate justice of the supreme court of the United States. He died May 30, 1865, in Nashville, Tenn. Catron, Thomas Benton, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Oct. 6, 1840, in Lafayette county. Mo. He has served as district attorney; and was United States attorney for New Mexico. He was four times a member of the New Mexico legislature. In 1895-97 he was a territorial delegate from New Mexico to the fifty-fourth congress. Catt, George William, civil engineer, business president, was born March 9, 1860, in Davenport, Iowa. In 1887-92 he was chief engineer of the San Francisco bridge company; and in 1893-99 was president and engineer of the New York dredging company. In 1899 he became president and engineer of the Atlantic Gulf and pacific company. He died in 1905 in New York City. Cattell, Alexander Gilmore, merchant, United States senator, was born Feb. 13, 1816, in Salem, N.J. In 1840 he was elected to the New Jersey state legislature. In 1846 he settled in Philadelphia as a merchant; became a director in the Mechanics' bank; and was elected to the city council in 185054. In 1858 he organized the Corn Exchange bank; and was president of the same. In 186-71 he was United States senator to fill a vacancy. He died April 8, 1894, in Jamesin Georgia.
