In 1895 he was president of the American psychological association; and in 1902 was president of the New York academy of science. He is editor of Science, and the Popular Science Monthly. He is the author of American Men of Science. Cattell, William Cassidy, educator, clergyman, college president, was born Aug. 30, 1837, in Salem, N.J. In 1855-60 he was professor of latin and Greek in Lafaytte college; and in 1863 became its president. Through his exertions more than one million dollars was obtained for the institution; extensive grounds were added; and commodious buildings were erected. He died Feb. n, 1898, in Philadelphia, Pa. Catterson, Robert Francis, soldier, was born in Indiana. In 1861 he was a, sergeant in the fourteenth regiment Indiana infantry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadiergeneral of volunteers.
Caughey, James, clergyman, author, was bom in 1810 in Ireland. He was a noted revivalist. He was the author of Methodism in Earnest; Revival Miscellanies; Earnest Christianity; and Glimpses of Soul Saving.
He
died in 1892. Canldwell, Leslie Giffen, painter, artist, was born Oct. 18, 1864, in New York City. He has exhibited his paintings in Berlin, Boston, Philadelphia, Cincinnati and St. Louis. Several of his pictures were exhibited at the World's Columbian exposition.

Caulfield, Bernard G., lawyer, congressman, was Ijorn Oct. 15, 1838, in Alexandria, Va. He removed to Chicago in 1853; and in 1873-77 he was a representative from Illinois to the forty-third and forty-fourth congresses. He died Dec. 19, 1887, in Deadwood,
S.D. Caulfield, Harry S., congressman. He was elected to the sixtieth congress from the eleventh district of Missouri for the term of 1907-09. Caulfield, Henry Stewart, lawyer, congressman was born on Dec. 9, 1873, in St. Louis, Mo. He received a common school education; and graduated from the law department of the Washington university. He was a member of the committee on the judiciary of the Missouri house of representatives.

from Missouri to the sixtieth congress as a republican. Caulkins, Frances Mainwaring, historian, author, was born in 1796 in New London, Conn. She was the author of History of Norwich; and History of New London. She died Feb. 3, 1869, in New London, Conn.

He was engaged in farming and fruit growing; and was a member of the Delaware state senate in 1875-77. He was a delegate to the national democratic convention of 1884. In 1891-95 he was a representative from Delaware to the fiftysecond and fifty-third congresses as a democrat.

of its constitutional convention.

removed to Montana in 1866; and in 1867-71 he was a territorial delegate to the fortieth and forty-first congresses as a democrat. Cavanaugh, John William, educator, clercollege president, was born May 23, 1870, in Leetonia, Ohio. In 1890 he graduated with the degree of A.B. from the uni-

He is a member of the university of Notre Dame. He is a member of the Rhodes scholarship committee for Indiana.
