He held professorship in Williams and Lafayette colleges and was for many years president of the normal school at Albany. He was the author of Example of Washington; Citizen's Manual; Christian Ethics; The Science of Government; Studies in Bryant; and other works. He died Aug. 30, 1885, in New York City. Alden, March, journalist, author, was born Sept. 29, 1869, in Easton, Pa. Since 1891 he has been on the staff of the Philadelphia Press. He is the author of a volume upon the Philippines. Alden, Raymond MacDonald, educator, author, was born March 30, 1873, in New Hartford, Conn. He is assistant professor of English literature and rhetoric at the Leland Stanford university. He is the author of Rise of Formal Satire in England; The Art of Debate; and other works. Alden, Roger, soldier, was born Feb. 11, 1754, in Lebanon, Conn. He graduated from Yale in 1773; and served in the revolutionary war as aide to General Greene. Subsequently he became agent of the Holland land company in 1795-1835, and resided at Meadville. Pa. He was ordnance storekeeper at West Point in 1825-36. He was a greatgrandson of John Alden. He died Nov. 5, 1836, in West Point, N.Y. Alden, Timothy, clergyman, college president, author, was born Aug. 28, 1771, in Yar;
Mass. In 1885-89 he was United States consul-general at Rome; and lived in London. He was the author of A New Robinson Crusoe; Domestic Explosives; Shooting Stars; Moral Pirates; Cruise of the Canoe Club; Life of Christopher Columbus; Adventures of Jiramie Brown; The Loss of the Swansea; Cruise of the Yost; His Daughter; Van Wagener's Ways; The Mystery of Elias J. Roebuck; and other works. He died Jan. 14, 1908, in London, England. Alderman, Edward Sinclair, educator, lecturer, college president, author, was born May 15, 1861, in Wilmington, N.C. In 189396 he was professor of pedagogy at the university of North Carolina; and since 1896 has been president of that institution. He has attained note as a lecturer on historical,
and literary subjects. He is the author of Life of William Hooper, Signer of the Declaration of Independence; and Short History of North Carolina. Alderman, Edwin Anderson, educator, college president, author, was born ilay 15, 1861, in Wilmington, N.C. In 1882 he graduated from the universocial

He published a collection of epitaphs and inscriptions in five columes entitled An Account of Sundry Missions Among the Senecas; and prepared a valuable catalogue of the library of the New York historical society. He died July 5, 1839, in Pittsburg, Pa. Alden, Timothy, inventor, was born in 1819 in Barnstable, Mass. He was sixth in descent from John Alden, the Mayflower pilgrim. 'VATien very young and a compositor in his brother's printing office he said: If I live I will invent a machine to do this tiresome, work. He steadily pursued this object, and after twenty years' labor invented a machine for the setting and distributing type, which was improved.after his death by Henry W. Alden. He died Dee. 4, 1858, in New York. Alden, William Clinton, educator, geologist, author, was born Sept. 27, 1871, in Mitchell, Iowa. In 1894-95 he was principal of schools at C'enterville, S.D. In 1897-1901 he was special assistant in the United States geological survey; and since 1901 has been assistant geologist. He has followed a special line of scientific investigation in the glacial geology of North America. Alderson, John Duffy, lawyer, congressman, was born No. 29, 1854, at Nicholas Court-House, W.Va. He was appointed prosecuting attorney in each of the counties of Nicholas and Webster to fill vacancies occasioned by the death of his father, Hon. Joseph A. Alderson; and in 1876-88 was prosecuting attorney for these counties. In 188995 he was a representative from West Virginia to the flfty-first, fifty-second and fifty-third congresses as a democrat. Alderson, Victor Clifton, educator, college president, was born June 4, 1863, in Plymouth, Mass. He graduated from Harvard university; and received the degree of A.M. from that institution.
