of the woman's christian temperance union of Iowa, of which she became corresponding secretary. She has lectured extensively; and was a member of the national convention of 1890 held in Cleveland, Ohio.

Aldrich, Nelson Wilmarth, merchant, congressman. United States senator, was born Nov. 6, 1841, in Foster, R.I. He was president of the council of Providence in 1872-73. He was a member of the state house of representatives in 1875-76, serving as speaker during the latter year. In 1§79-81 he was a representative from Rhode Island to the forty-sixth congress; and in 1881-1909 was United States senator from Rhode Island.

Aldrich, Orlando Wesley, soldier, lawyer, Wesleyan university at Bloomington, Ill., from which institution he received the degrees of B'.A:, M.A., Ph.D. and D.C.L.; and from the Albert university he received the degrees of LL.B. and LL.D. During the civil war he served in the fourteenth regiment New York volunteer infantry. He has filled the chair of professor of law in the Illinois Wesleyan university, and also in the Ohio state university. He is a successful lawyer and legal writer of Columbus, Ohio. He has been president of the Ohio society sons of the American revolution; president Ohio society of the war of 1812; and also national vice-president of that society. He has been president of the Worthington, Claytonville and Columbus street railway company; and a director in several corporations. In 1888 he was a commissioner of the Ohio centennial; and has been vice-president of the Ohio horticultural society. He has been judge advocate department of Ohio, grand army of the republic; and is a member of several scientific societies.

Aldrich, Perley Dunn, educator, vocalist, author, was born Nov. 6, 1863, in Blackstone, Mass. He was educated at the New England conservatory of music, in 1885-88 he was professor of music at the university of Kansas; in 1890-93 at the Utica conservatory of New York; and in 1893-1905 at Rochester, N.Y. He is one of the leading authorities in America on voice production; is director of the Central congregational church choir of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a teacher of singing in that city. He is the author Of Vocal Economy; La Belle Dame; Book of Songs; and numerous anthems and songs.

Aldrich, Richard, journalist, author, was born July 31, 1863, in Providence, R.I. In 1881 he graduated from Providence high school; and from Harvard college in 1885. He studied music in regular Harvard course and later in Germany. In 1885-89 he was reporter, music and dramatic critic and editorial writer of the Providence Journal.In 1889-91 he was private secretary of United States Senator Dixon; was on the editorial staff for the York Tribune in 1889 1902; and since 1902 has been music critic on the New York Times. He is the translat- or of Lilli Lehmann's How to Sing; and the author of A Guide to Parsifal.

Aldrich, Samuel Nelson, lawyer, financier, was born Feb. 3, 1838, in Upton, Mass. He has been president of the central Massachusetts railway company; was assistant treasurer of the United States at Boston under President Cleveland's first administration; and since 1890 has been president of the State national bank of Boston, Mass. Aldrich, Thomas Bailey, author, poet, was born Nov. 11, 1836, in Portsmouth, N.H. His early youth was spent in Louisiana. At the death of his father he entered the counting-house of his uncle in New York City. He occupied editorial positions for ten years on various papers; and in 1881 succeeded William D. Howells as editor of the Atlantic Monthly, which position he resigned nine years later to devote his entire time to personal literary work and travel. He is the author of the following poetical works: The Bells; Ballad of Baby Bell; Pampinea; Flower and Thorn; Cloth of Gold; Friar Jerome's Beautiful Book; Lyrics and Sonnets; The Sisters' Tragedy; Wyndham Towers; Unguarded Gates; Mercedes and Later Lyrics; Judith; and Holofernes. His prose works are: Prudence Palfrey; The Queen of Sheba; The Stillwater Tragedy; Marjorie Daw and Other Stories; Two Bites at a Cherry, with Other Tales; The Story of a Bad Boy; An Old Town by the Sea, a description of Portsmouth, the author's birthplace; From Ponkapog to Pesth; Travel Sketches; and other works. He died March 19, 1907, in Boston, Mass.


Aldrich, Thomas Bell, educator, chemist, scientist, was born June 10, 1859, at Port Jefferson, N.Y. In 1892-93 he was professor of physics and chemistry at the Lake View high school of Chicago,' 111. Since 1898 he has been research chemist to Parke, Davis and company of Detroit, Mich. He has made original researches in chlorotone and bromet-one.
