Alexander, Evan, congressman, was born Xorth Carolina. He graduated from the Princeton college in 1787; and was a member of the legislature for two years. In 1805-09 he was a representative from North Carolina to the ninth and tenth congresses. He died in

Oct. 28, 1809, in

North Carolina.

Alexander, Francesca, artist, author, was born about 1850 in Boston, Mass. She is the author of Story of Ida; Tuscan Songs; and other works. Alexander, Francis, artist, was born in 1800 in Connecticut. When eighteen years of age he began painting in water-color without an instructor; and gained great popularity as a portrait painter in Boston, Mass. He went to Europe in 1831; and died in Florence, Italy. Alexander, George, educator, clergyman, was born Oct. 12, 1843, in West Charlton, N. Y. He was educated at Union college; and in 1877-84 filled a professorship in that institution. In 1870-83 he filled a pastorate in the East avenue presbyterian church of Schenectady, N.Y.; and since 1884 has been pastor of the University place presbyterian church of New York City. He has been vicepresident of council of the New York university; 'and president of the board of trustees of New York college of dentistry and also of Mackenzie college. He has been president of the board of foreign missions of the presbyterian church in the United States of America ; a trustee of Union college ; and a director of Princeton theological seminary. Alexander, Grace, journalist, author, was born June 14, 1872, in Indianapolis, Ind. In 1891-1903 she was music critic and editorial writer on the Indianapolis News. She is the author of Judith. Alexander, Gross, educator, clergyman, author, was born June 1, 1852, in Scottsville, Ky. He is professor of the new testament, Greek and exegesis in the Vanderbilt university of Nashville, Tenn. He is the author of The Beginnings of Methodism in the South. Alexander, Hartley Burr, editor, author, was horn April 9, 1873, in Lincoln, Neb. He is the author of The Problem of Metaphysics; and Poetry and the Individual.

Alexander, Henry Martyn, director, milliowas born about 1868. In 1890 he graduated with the degree of A.B. from Princeton university. He was a director of the Equitable life assurance society; and is a member of the New York City bar association. Alexander, Henry P., merchant, congressman, was born in 1802 in New York. He engaged in commerce. In 1849-51 he was a representative from New York to the thirty first congress. He died Feb. 22, 1867, in Little Falls, N.Y. Alexander, James, civil engineer, lawyer, was born about 1698 in Scotland. In 1718 he came to America; and served as surveyorgeneral of New York and New Jersey. He served the province in the legislature and in naire,

the council. In 1731-23 he was attorney-general and also secretary of the province of New York. With Franklin he was the founder of the American philosophical society. He died April 2, 1756, in Albany, N.Y. Alexander, James, congressman, was born in Maryland. He was a resident of St. Clairsville, Ohio; in 1837-39 he was a representative from Ohio to the twenty-fifth congress. He died Aug. 6, 1846, in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

Alexander, James Barton Stone, soldier, in Virginia, in 1856 he graduated from the United States military academy at West Point. He was made second lieutenant in the fifth regiment United States infantry; was transferred to the ninth regiment United States infantry; and resigned in 1861. He

near Covington, Tenn. He was educated at the Tipton male high school; and at the Lebanon law school of Cutaberland university.

administration and many years private secretary to United States Senator Wilkinson Call of Florida. In 1892-93 and 1908-09 he served as a representative in the Florida state legislature. In 1908 he was a delegate at large to the democratic national convention. He is a prominent attorney-at-law of De Land, Fla.; and a successful orange and fruit grower. Alexander, James Henry, millionaire, was born June 8, 1848, in New York. He was educated in the grammer and high schools of New York City. For many years he was interested in steamship lines to Havana and Mexico; has now retired from active busi;

City.

Alexander, James Waddel, clergyman, author, was born March 13, 1804, in Louisa county, Va. He was a presbyterian clergyman of New York City. He was the author of Plain Words to a Young Communicant; Sacramental Discourses; Thoughts on Preaching; Life of Archibald Alexander; Consolation; The American Mechanic and Workingman and other works. He died July 31, 1859, in Ned Sweet Springs, Va. Alexander, James Waddell, insurance president, orator, author, was born July 19, 1839, in Princeton, N.J. He was a member of the New Y'ork bar until 1866. He then entered the Equitable life insurance society of the United States, with which he has been since connected; and on the death of Henry B. Hyde in 1899, succeeded to the office of president. He is known as a public speaker. He is the author of Princeton, Old and New.
