in 1848. She is also treasurer of the savings bank of her native town; treasurer of the school district library board; and is a successful business woman and financier. For many years she has been identified with the religious, educational, social and business affairs of her community; and has held various positions of trust and honor. Allan, Jessie, librarian, founder, was born Dec. 15, 1861, in Omaha, Neb. In 1881 she graduated from the Omaha high school. Soon afterward she entered the Omaha public library as assistant to her sister; and in 188693 was librarian of that institution. Under her able administration a new library was built. She died Sept. 12, 1895, in Omaha,
Neb. Alexander, John, congressman, was born in Spartanburg, S.C. After receiving a public school education he moved to Ohio. He became widely known in politics as the Buffalo of the West. In 1813-17 he was a representative from Ohio to the thirteenth and fourteenth congresses. He died in Ohio. Alexander, John Brevard, soldier, physician, surgeon, state senator, author, was born May 27, 1834, in Mecklenburg county, N.C. Alexander, John Edmiston, educator, clergyman, college president, genealogist, was born June 2, 1815, near Lewistown, Pa. In 1842 he became a clergyman of the presbyterian church; and in 1842-62 was principal of the Miller academy of Washington, Ohio, where he had been pastor for twenty years. Greeneville, Tenn. He was the author of History of the Synod of Tennessee; and A Record of the Alexander Family. He died April 3, 1902, in Greeneville, Tenn. Alexander, John Henry, scientist, author, was born June 26, 1812, in Annapolis, Md. He was a noted Maryland scientist. He was the author of History of the Metallurgy of Iron; Universal Dictionary of Weights and Measures, Ancient and Modern; International Tonnage Treatise of Mathematical Instruments; Introits; and Catena Dominica, a collection of religious poems. He died March 2, 1867, in Baltimore, Md. Alexander, John M., soldier, business man, statesman, was born May 17, 1841, in Delaware county, Ohio. In 1861 he enlisted in company A, ninety-first regiment Ohio volunteer infantry; served until the end of the
civil
war
in Sheridan's
army; and was woun-
ded at Fisher's Hill in 1864. In 1883 he was elected mayor of Gallipolis, Ohio served two terms; and in 1891 was again elected to the same office and served two more terms.

He was the author of Commentaries on the Psalms, Isaiah, Acts, Matthew, and Mark; and many theological reviews. He died Jan. 28, 1860, in Princeton, N.J.
