Ames, Mrs. Fanny B., reformer, sociologist, was born June 14, 1840, in Canandaigua, N. Y. Her first experience in practical work was gained in military hospitals during the civil war. In 1863 she was married to the Rev. Charles G. Ames. She has been the president of the children's aid society of Pennsylvania; was for two years president of the new century club of Philadelphia; in 1891 was appointed factory inspector in Massachusetts; and is a member of the Boston school committee. Ames, Fisher, lawyer, orator, congressman, author, was born April 9, 1758, in Dedham, Mass. He graduated from Harvard university in 1774; studied law in Boston; and commenced the practice of law in his native town. He distinguished himself as a member of the Massachusetts convention for ratifying the constitution in 1788; and from that body passed into the state legislature. 1789-97 he was a representative to the first, second, third and fourth congresses, and gained great reputation for his eloquence and exalted patriotism. He was devotedly attached to Washington; andwas the author of the Address from the house of representatives to the president prior to his retirement from office. He wrote much for the papers on the public affairs of America, England and France; and both as a writer and orator attained a very prominent position and exerted an extensive influence. In 1809 a collection of his writings, and his life, were published by Rev. Dr. Kirkman; in 1854 a more complete edition was issued, edited by his son. He died July 4, 1808, in Dedham, Mass. Ames, Frank Morton, manufacturer, statesman, was born Aug. 14, 1833, in North Easton, Mass. He gained a practical knowledge of the shovel business owned by the Ames family; and in 1858 took charge of the Kinsley iron and machine company of Canton, Mkss., of which he became president and principal owner. In 1869 and in 1883 he was a representative to the Massachusetts state legislature; and in 1884 was a member of the state senate. He died Aug/ 23, 1898, in Penaquid, Maine. Ames, H. E., naval surgeon, was born about 1840 in Maryland. In 1875 he became assistant surgeon in the United States navy; in 1878 was made passed assistant surgeon; and in 1891 was promoted to surgeon. In

1897-1900 he was attached to the navy yard at Norfolk, Va.; and in 1900 was attached to the Massachusetts. Ames, Frederick Lothrpp, manufacturer, capitalist, philanthropist, was born June 8, 1835, in North Easton, Mass. In 1854 he graduated from Harvard university. In 1863 he became a

Ames, Henry, farmer, business president, was born Nov. 20, 1855, in St. Louis, Mo. He was educated at Wyman institute and at Washington university of St. Louis, Mo. attended the Pennsylvania military academy of Chester, Pa.; and graduated from the Washington and Lee university of Lexington, Va.

vice-president of Lindell hotel association; secretary the New Lindell hotel company of St. Louis, Mo.; and director of Belcher's sugar refinery company of St. Louis, Mo. He has been interested in military affairs; and major of the first regiment Missouri national guard. He is a member of the merchants' exchange, St. Louis club, the Missouri athletic club and the New York club of New York City. He is now a successful farmer and agriculturalist and proprietor of Maples farm of Webster Groves, St. Louis county. Mo.
