Clay, Brutus J., state legislator, congressnaan, was born July 1, 1808, in Madison county, Ky. In 1840 he served in the Kentucky state legislature. In 1863-65 he was a representative from Kentucky to the thirty-eighth congress. He died in Kentucky. Clay, Cassius Marcellus, lawyer, statesman, was born Oct. 19, 1810, in Madison county, Ky. He was a member of the Kentucky state legislature in 1835, 1837 and 1840, and of the national whig convention of 1840 at Harrisburg. He was a minister to Russia in 1861-9; and secured the Acquisition of Alaska to the United States. He died July 23, 1903, in White Hall, Ky. Clay, Cecil, soldier, was born in Pennsylvania. In 1861 he was first lieutenant in the fifty-eighth regiment Pennsylvania volunteer infantry;' and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. Died in 1907. Clay, Clement Claiborne, lawyer, jurist, United States senator, was born in 1819 in Huntsville, Ala. He served in the legislature of Alabama in 1842, 1844 and 1845; and was elected in 1846 a judge of the Madison county court. In 1852 he was a presidential elector; and in 1853-61 he was United States senator from Alabama. He took part in the civil war of that year, and was subsequently confined in Fortress Monroe as a prisoner of state; but was released in 1866. He died Jan. 3, 1882, in Huntsville, Ala. Clay, Clement Comer, lawyer, jurist, state legislator, governor. United States senator, was born Dec. 17, 1789, in Halifax county, Va. He was elected a member of the territorial council of Alabama; in 1819 was elected one of the judges of the circuit court; and in 1820 was chosen chief justice of that court. In 1828 he was elected to the state legislature; and was made speaker. In 183935 he was a representative from Alabama to the twenty-first, twenty-second and twentythird congresses; and in 1835-37 was the seventh governor of Alabama. In 1837-43 he

Clay, Henry, orator. United States senawas born April 13, 1777, in Hanover county, Va. In 1811-35 was speaker of the tor,
house from the twelfth to the eighteenth congresses. He was sent to the United States senate from Kentucky in 1806, and from that date, his life, time and talents were interwoven with the political welfare of his country. In 1825-29 he was secretary of state. He was thrice a candidate for the U. S. presidency; but his adherence to principle instead of party lost for him the unanimous vote. When warned by his friends that his compromise bill would lessen his chances for the presidency, he gave his ever-remembered reply: I would rather be right than president. In 1806-11, 1831-43 and 1849-53 he was United States senator. He died June 29, 1852, in Washington, D.C. Clay, James F., state senator, congressman, was born Oct. 39, 1840, in Henderson, Ky. He was a state senator in 1873-75. In 1883-85 he was a representative from Kentucky to the forty-eighth congress as a
democrat. Clay, James Ralph, educator, was born Aug. 19, 1867, near Camden Pt., Mo. He attended the Gem City business college of Quincy, 111.; and the Normal school at Chillicothe, Mo. He has principally been engaged in educational work; and is the vice-president of the Epworth league at Dearborn Mo. Clay, John Brown, lawyer, diplomat", congressman, was born Nov. 8, 1817, in Washington, D.C. He devoted himself to agriculture near St. Louis, Mo. In 1849-50 he was elected charge d'affaires to Portugal. In 1856 he was elected a representative from Kentucky to the thirty-fourth congress as a democrat. Clay, John Cecil, painter, artist, was born April 2, 1875, in Ronceverte, W.Va. His first professional work was done for the Saturday Evening Post in 1899. He has designed and arranged books of his drawings, among which are In Love's Garden; The Portfolio of Celebrated Actresses; The Portfolio of Authors; and The Lovers Mother Goose.
