In 1860 he removed to
Richmond, Ind., and engaged in the business of milling. He entered the union army in 1861 as captain, and served with gallantry throughout the civil war, rising to the rank of brevet-colonel and brevet brigadier-general. In 187981 he was Qnited States marshal for Indiana; and in 1881-85 was commissioner of the pension bureau, at Washington, D.C. In 1885 he .engaged in the practice of law in Washington, D.C. Duell, Robert Holland, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Dec. 20, 1823, in Warren, jST.Y. He was district attorney for Cortland county in 1850-56; and in 1856 was elected county judge. In 1859-63 and 1871-75 was a representative from New York to the thirty-sixth, thirty-seventh, forty-second and forty-third congresses. He died Feb. 11, 1891, in Cortland. N.Y. Duell, Rodolphus H., lawyer, was born Dec. 20, 1824, in Warren, N.Y. At the age of seventeen he began the practice of law; and for forty years he was one of the most foremost lawyers in Cortland, N.Y. In 1885 he was elected county judge; and in 1859-63 he served in the national congress. He is the president of local board of the Cortland state normal school.

Duerink, John Baptist, missionary, was in 1809, in Belgium. He was an accomplished botanist; and traversed a great portion of Illinois and Ohio in search of rare plants and fiowers, discovering several new varieties, one of which is known as the prunus Duerinkiana. The mission of the Pottawattamies, which he conducted, owed its great success to him. He died in 1857 in Kansas.

Duff, John, actor, was born in 1787 in Ireland. He was for many years the most popular actor in the old Philadelphia company. His versatility seems to have been almost unbounded. He could act Richard or Jeremy Diddler, sing a comic song or take a part in an opera, with equal acceptability. He died in April, 1831, in Philadelphia, Pa.
