Fairbanks, Arthur Willard, physician, surgeon, ethnologist, was born Oct. 9, 1869, in Boston, Mass. In 1893 he graduated from Harvard university medical school of Boston, Mass.; and subsequently studied at the university of Berlin, Germany. He has been instructor in clinical medicine at Tufts colHe lege; and medical inspector of schools. was assistant in the department of ethnology at the World's Columbian exposition; and was engaged in ethnological and archaeological research among the Indian tribes of North Dakota and Montana. He is a successful physician of Boston, Mass.; a specialist in the diseases of children; and is visiting physician to the Boston dispensary and to the Boston floating hospital. He is one of the board of directors of the Fairbanks Family in America association; a member of the Boston society of natural history; a member of the Boston medical library; and a, member of the Massachusetts medical society and of various other organizations. study of languages as a pastime, first mastering French and German; then learning Italian, Norwegian, Russian, and other languages. He also understands Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Portuguese, Polish, Arabic, Japanese, Volapuk, Finish; Aztec of Mexico, about twenty in all. As a musician he has also attained success, having organized and conducted several string combinations. In 1893 he was commercial agent and interpreter for the manufacturers of the kodak, at the world's fair at Chicago; and in 1895 accepted a position with a New York house to travel abroad. Fairbanks, Charles Warren, vice-president of the United States, was born May 11, 1852, near Unionville Center, Ohio. He was educated in the common schools; and in 1872 graduated from the Ohio Wesleyan university in the classical course. In 1874 he was admitted to the practice of law; moved to Indianapolis in the same year;
and
there practiced profession until admission to the United States senate. In 1885 he was elected a trustee of the Ohio Wesleyan university. In 1892 and 1898 he was chairman of the Indiana republican state conventions. In 1897-1905 he was a member of the United States senate. In 1896, 1900 and 1904 he was delegate to the republican conventions held in St. Louis, Philadelphia and Chicago. In 1904 he was unaniiiiously nominated for vice-president of the United States and was elected on the ticket with Theodore Roosevelt, receiving three hundred and thirty-seven of the four hundred and seventy-six electoral votes. Fairbanks, Erastus, manufacturer, governor, was born Oct. 28, 1792, in Brimfield, Mass. He was a member of the legislature in 1836-38; president of the Passumpsic and Connecticut river railroad company in 1849; and the eighteenth governor of Vermont in 1852-53 and in 1860-61.
