at the college of Charleston;
and at the university of Berlin, Germany. For twelve years he was a representative in the South Carolina state legislature; was mayor of Charleston for one term; and has attained prominence at the bar. He is now president of the board of trustees of the college of Charleston. Fickett, Fred Wildon, lawyer, jurist, explorer, was born Aug. 29, 1867, in Dixmont,
Maine. In 1882-85 he was in charge of the United States signal service stations in Southeast Alaska. In 1895 he represented his department of the government on the famous Copper river expedition. For two years he served as judge of police court of Galveston, Texas. Ficklen, John Rose, educator, author, was born Dee. 14, 1858, in Falmouth, Va. He filled the chair of history and rhetoric in Tulane university for a number of years; and in 1893 he was appointed professor of history and political science in the same university. He is the author of A History of Louisiana, written with Miss Grace Elizabeth King as joint author. Ficklin, Joseph, educator, author, was born Sept. 9, 1833, in Winchester, Ky. He is a professor of mathematics in the university of Missouri. He is the author of The Complete Algebra; and Elements of Algebra, and a series of arithmetical text-books. Ficklin, Orlando B., lawyer, state legislator, congressman, was born in 1808 in Kentucky. In 1834 he was a member of the Illinois state legislature; and was attorney for the Wabash circuit in 1835. In 1838 and in 1842 he was again elected to the legislature. In 1843-49 and 1851-53 he was a representative from Illinois to the twentyeighth, twenty-ninth, thirtieth and thirtysecond congresses. In 1853 he was colonel of militia;
and in 1856 was a presidential
elector.
Fiebeger, Gustave Joseph, educator, civil engineer, author, was born May 9, 1858, in Akron, Ohio. In 1879 he graduated from the United States military academy at West Point; in 1879-96 was an officer in the corps of engineers United States army; and was engineer in charge of the improvement of rivers and harbors in Virginia and North Carolina and in the city of Washington. In 1896 he attained the rank of lieutenant-colonel; and since that time has been professor of engineering in the United States military academy. He has written extensively on military and engineering He is the author of Civil Engisubjects. neering. Fiedler, William H. F., merchant, state legislator, congressman, was born Aug. 25, 1847,

in New York City. In 1877-78 he was a representative in' the New Jersey state legislature; and in 1879-81 was mayor of Newark. In 1882 he was, a third time, elected to the state assembly to fill a vacancy; and in 1883-85 he was a representative from New Jersey to the forty-eighth congress as a
democrat. Field, A. P., statesman. In 1863 he claimed to have been legally elected a representative from Louisiana to the thirty-eighth congress as a republican. He secured a certificate showing he had received the majority of votes in second election he had held. He was not allowed to serve; but was voted two thousand dollars for compensation, mileage
and expenses. Field, Allen W., lawyer, jurist, was born 28, 1853, in La Salle, 111. In 1886 he was city attorney of Lincoln, Neb.; and in 1887-91 was district judge. In 1899 he was a candidate for the United States senate. Field, Archelaus 6., physician, surgeon,

attained success as a noted physician and surgeon of Iowa; ana for many years filled the chair of physiology and pathology in the
Keokuk medical school. In 1872 he was president of the Iowa state medical society; and was president of the Des Moines school of technology. In 1876 he was a delegate to the international
medical congress; and served two terms as mayor of North Des Moines. Field, Benjamin, state senator, was born June 12, 1816, in Dorset, Vt. He was associated with George Pullman in the construction of his railway sleeping cars. In 1854-55 he was elected to the New York state senate; and in 1867 was a member of the constitutional convention. He died in August, 1876, in Albion, N.Y. Field, Benjamin Hazard, philanthropist, was born May 2, 1814, in Winchester county, N. Y. He was presirlent of the Historical society in 1886. He was an incorporator of the American museum of natural history, the Sheltering arms, and the society for the prevention of cruelty to children; and was president of the free circulating library and the eye and ear infirmary.
