years in Warrensburg, Mo. In 1875-1905 he States was United senator from Missouri as a democrat; he was chairman of the senate committee on engrossed bills; and a member of the committees on appropriations, military affairs, rules and other committees; and was also a member of the select committee on industrial expositions. Since 1905 he has been interstate commerce commissioner. Cockrell, Robert Spratt, lawyer, jurist, was born Jan. 22, 1866, in Livingston, Ala. In 1884 he became chief justice of the supreme court of Arkansas, and received the re-election. He died in 1901, in Little Rock, Ark. Cockroft, S. Leonidas, lawyer, public official, was born Deo. 6, 1853, in Carthage, Miss. He was educated at the university of Mississippi; and at the Lebanon normal university of Ohio. He soon attained success in the practice of law; and for sixteen years in 1886-1902 he was attorney-general for the state of Tennessee in the fourteenth judicial circuit of the state. He is now secretary and treasurer of the state board of law examiners for the state of Tennessee; and resides in Memphis, Tenn. Cocks, William Willets, farmer, congressman, was born July 24, 1861, in Westbury, Long Island, N.Y. He was educated in Swarthmore college. He is by occupation a farmer, having farms on Long Island and a ranch in Wabaunsee county, Kan. He has always been identified with public aflfairs of his community; and in 1894-1900 was commissioner of highways of the town of North Hempstead. In 1900 he was elected state senator. Codding, Ichabod, clergyman, lecturer, abwas born in 1811 in Bristol, N.Y. He served for five years as agent and lecturer of the anti-slavery society, speaking conolitionist,

Coddington, David Smith, lawyer, was born Sept. 23, 1833, in New York. He was a well-known figure in the fashionable life of his day. He died Sept. 2, 1865, in Saratoga. Coddington, Jonathan Inslee, merchant, was born Dec. 23, 1784, in Woodbridge, N.Y. For two decades he was among the most prominent and wealthy commission merchants of New York City. For four years he was postmaster of New York; and he was on most intimate terms with Presidents Jackson and Van Buren. He declined the democratic nomination for governor of New York. He died Dec. 24, 1856, in New York City.

He died Dec. 23, 1847, in Dorchester, Mass. Codman, John, sailor, author, was bom Aug. 16, 1814, in Dorchester, Mass. He was a noted captain in the merchant marine. He is the author of Sailors' Life and Sailors' Yarns; Ten Months in Brazil; The Mormon Country The Round Trip by Way of Panama A Solution of the Mormon Problem and Winter Sketches from the Saddle. He died in 1900 in Boston, Mass.
