In 1820-31 he was the thirteenth governor of North Carolina. He died in September, 1823, in Surry county, N.C. Franklin, John, soldier, legislator, jurist, was born Sept. 26, 1749, in Canaan, Conn, He was a captain during the revolutionary war; and was several times a member of the Connecticut state assembly. He died March 1, 1831, in Athens, Pa. Franklin, John P., farmer, educator, clergyman, was born July 26, 1860, in Clinton, La. He graduated from the Gammon seminary of Atlanta, Ga.; has attained success as a school teacher and a clergyman. He has filled a pastorate in Lumberton, N.C; and now fills a pastorate in Mount Airy, N.C. Franklin, John R., lawyer, congressman, was born May 6, 1820, in Worcester, Md. He served in the state legislature of Maryland in 1843; and also in 1849, when he was elected speaker. In 1851 he was chosen president of the board of public works of the state; and in 1853-55 he was a representative from Maryland to the thirty-third congress. He died Jan. 11, 1878, in Worchester county, Md. Franklin, Meshach, state senator, congressman, was born in 1773 in Surry county, N.C. In 1807-15 he was a representative from North Carolina to the tenth, eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth congresses. He served in the house of commons of that state in 1800; and in the state senate in 1828-29. He died Dec. 18, 1839, in Surry county, N.C. Franklin, Samuel Rhoads, naval officer, author, was born Aug. 35, 1825, in York, Pa. In 1841 he was appointed a midshipman; served in the Mexican war; and was a commander during the civil war. In 1880 he was promoted to commodore; in 1885 became rear admiral; and a few years later was placed on the retired list. He is the author of Memoirs of a Rear Admiral. Franklin, Thomas Levering, clergyman, author, was born April 10, 1832, in Philadelphia, Pa. For six years he was editor of the Episcopal Register of Philadelphia, Pa. In 1866 he founded the Jane Grey school of Mount Morris, N.Y.; and was its rector until 1870. He was the author of The Creed; and Divorce. He died. in 1899 in Philadelphia, Pa. Franklin, Walter M., railroad president. was born April 36, 1852, in Lancaster City, Pa. Since 1890 he has been president of the Lancaster, Oxford and southern railroad at Lancaster, Pa. Franklin, William, colonial governor, was born in 1729 in Philadelphia, Pa. In 176366 he was colonial governor of New Jersey. He published several political works. Ho died Nov. 17, 1813, in England.

Franklin, William Suddards, civil engineer, educator, author, was born Oct. 27, 1863, in Geary City, Kan. Since 1897 he has been professor of physics and electrical engineer in the Lehigh university of Bethlehem, Pa. He is the author of Elements of Physics; and The Elements of Alternating Currents.
