mishes until its close. In 1872 he established the firm of the Rochester lumber company, which became one of the largest glassworks in the country. Inl901 he established the H. C. Fry glass company, a large plant for the manufacture of cut glass and the higher grades of glassware; and it is now one of the most important and best known plants in America. Continuously since its organization in 1884 he has been president of the First national bank of Rochester, Pa.; and is identified with various other industrial and financial corporations.

In 1835-39 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the twentyfourth and twenty-fifth congresses, and was at one time auditor-general of the state. He died Nov. 28, 1866, in Norristown, Pa. Fry, James Barnet, soldier, author, was born Feb. 22, 1827, in CarroUton, 111. He was a colonel and brevet major-general in the United States army; was retired from active service in 1881; and thereafter lived in New York City. He was the author of Sketch of the Adjutant-General's Department in 1775-1875; Historical and Legal Effects of Brevets in Great Britain and the United States from their Origin in 1692; Army Sacrifices; McDowell and Tyler in the Campaign of Bull Run; Operations of the Army under Buell; and New York and Conscription. He was the author of Lenora, an opera produced at the Chestnut Street theater in 1845. He died Dec. 21, 1864, in the West Indies. Frye, Alexis Everett, educator, author, was born Nov. 2, 1859, in North Haven, Maine. In 1886-90 he delivered nearly two thousand educational lectures. In 1890 he was admitted to the bar; and in 1891-93 was superintendent of schools of San Bernardino, Cal. He is the author of Child and Nature; Primary Geography; and several other educational works. Frye, James, soldier, was born in 1709, in Andover, Mass. He served at the capture of Louisburg in 1745; and commanded the Essex regiment at the beginning of the revolution, taking an active part in the battle of Bunker Hill. He died Jan. 8, 1776. Frye, James Albert, lawyer, author, was born May 5, 1863, in Boston, Mass. Since 1900 he has been colonel in the first Massachusetts heavy artillery.
