Geary, William M., railroad manager, was bom June 14, 1845, in East Greenville, Pa. Since 1863 he has been engaged in railway service; and since 1879 he has been superintendent of the Philadelphia, Newton and

March 28, 1859, in Croton, N.J. He practiced law in Clinton and Jersey City, N.J.; for ten years was president of the board of education. He is president of the First national bank of Clinton; and president of the Frenchtown water company. In 1900 and in 1906 he was elected a member of the New Jersey state senate. Geddes, George, engineer, state senator, was born Feb. 14, 1809, in Fairmont, N.Y. He was a member of the New York state senate in 1847-51. He had charge of lowering the canal of Seneca river in 1853-56. He died Oct. 8, 1883, in New York.

Geddes, James, manufacturer, jurist, congressman, was born July 22, 1763, in Carlisle, Pa. He was elected a magistrate in 1804; and in 1821 was in the New York state legislature; and in 1813 judge of the common pleas. In 1813-15 he was a representative from New York to the thirteenth congress. In 1882 he was appointed chief engineer of the Ohio canal; and in 1827 assisted in locating the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, as well as the Pennsylvania canal. He died Aug. 19, 1838, in Onondaga county,

He has been instructor, assistant professor and since 1892 professor of romance languages in Boston university. He is the author of Canadian French, Language and Literature; also several French prose translations; and articles on romance languages. Geddes, James Lorraine, soldier, poet, was born March 19, 1827, in Scotland. In 1857 he emigrated to Iowa; and there engaged During the civil war in educational work. he served in the union army; and was promoted a brigadier-general. For fifteen years he shared in the management of the Iowa He college of agriculture at Ames, Iowa. was the author of The Soldier's Battle Cry; and The Stars and Stripes. He died Feb. 21, 1887, in Ames, Iowa. Geddes, John, governor, was born about 1773 in Charleston, S.C. He was the thirteenth governor of South Carolina in 181820. He was a member and speaker of the South Carolina house of representatives. He died March 5, 1828, in Charleston, S.C. Gedney, Jonathan Haight, inventor, was born Feb. 25, 1798, in Rye, N.Y. He removed to New York City, and in 1825 owned the dry dock saw mill, which took fire in 1829. He invented the wooden cogs used setts.
