nality. Gilbert, Charles Benajah, educator, lecturer, author, was born March 9, 1855, in Wilton, Conn. In 1876 he graduated from Wil-

liams college. He became principal of high schools in various cities; in 1883-89 was principal of the St. Paul high school; and in 1889-96 was superintendent of schools at St. Paul, Minn. In 1896-1900 he was superintendent of schools at Newark, N.J.; and in 1900-03 filled the same position in Rochester, N.Y. In 1897-1900 he was lecturer of the teachers' college at Columbia university; and since 1903 has been editor-in-chief of the educational department of D. Appleton and company. In 1897 he was president of the national association of school superintendents. He is part author of Stepping Stones to Literature; A Graded List of Stories and Poems; and Stories of Heroes, in six volumes. Gilbert, Charles Champion, soldier, was bom March 1, 3 822, in Zanesville, Ohio. In 1861 he was inspector-general of the department of Cumberland; and of the army of the Ohio until 1863. He was promoted to a brigadier-generalship of volunteers in 1862; became acting major-general in command of the army of Kentucky; and for his gallantry at Perryville was brevetted colonel in the regular army. He became lieutenant colonel of the seventh infantry in 1868; becanie colonel of the seventeenth infantry in 1881; and was retired from active service in 1886. He died Jan. 17, 1903. Gilbert, Charles Henry, zoologist, author, was bom Dec. 5, 1859, in Rockford, 111. He has been ichthyologist, professor of zoology at Stanford university since 1891. He is the author of Synopsis of the Fishes of North America. Gilbert, David McConaughy, clergyman, author, was bom Feb. 4, 1836, in Gettysburg, Pa. He is a Lutheran clergyman of Virginia; and for five years was president of the evangelical Lutheran synod of Virginia. He is the author of The Lutheran Church in Virginia, 1776-1876; The Synod of Virginia; The Annihilation Theory Briefly Examined; and Muhlenberg's Ministry in Virginia. Gilbert,

He is the author of The Poetry of Job; The Student's Life of Jesus; and Revelation of Jesus.
