Robert, soldier, legislator, was
Gilchrist,
born Aug. 21, 1825, in Jersey CSty, N.J. He was a member of the New Jersey legislature in 1859. At the first call for troops in 1861 he went to the front as a captain in the second New Jersey regiment. In 1875 he was a candidate for the United States senate. He died July 6, 1888, in Jersey City, N.J.

poser, was born Jan. 8, 1846, in Jersey City, N.J, He has won three prizes for compositions from the Mendelssohn glee club of New York City; and in 1882 the Cincinnati May festival prize was awarded him. His principal works are Ode to the Sun; and
Autumn Dreaming. Gilder, Jeannette Leonard, journalist, dramatist, author, poet, was born Oct. 3, 1849, in Flushing, N.Y. In 1875 she joined the staff of the New York Herald as a book reviewer; and in 1880, in coimection with her brother, Joseph Benson Gilder, started the Critic. In 1876 she wrote a play entitled Quits, which was brought out in the Chestnut Street theater of Philadelphia. She
dramatized a Wonderful Woman for Rose Ey tinge; Sevenoaks for John T. Raymond; and a Comedy for Harry Becket. Gilder,

Gilder, Joseph B., journalist, critic, author, was born in Flushing, N.Y. In 1881 he founded with his sister, Jeannette L. Gilder, the Critic of New York City. He is the author of Essays from the Critic; Authors at Home; The American Idea; and
other works. Gilder, Richard Watson, journalist, author, poet, was born Feb. 8, 1844, in Bordentown, N.J. Since 1881 he has been editor-in-chief of The Century Magazine. He is the author of The New Day; The Celes-
Passion; Two Worlds; Lyrics; The Great Remembrance, and Other Poems; and Five Books of Song. Ts-Wch include all of tial

In 1904 he discovered prehistoric flint quarries in eastern Wyoming;, and in 1906 he discovered the oldest human remains ever found in America. He is a painter of Wyoming and Nebraska landscapes. Gilder, William Henry, clergyman, was born Sept. 17, 1812, in Philadelphia, Pa. He became chaplain of the fortieth regiment of New York volunteers at the beginning of the civil war; and remained in active service until his death.

Henry Alger, soldier, lawyer, was born on Aug. 1, 1840, in Duchess
Gildersleeve, jurist,
county, N.Y. He served as captain and major during the civil war; and was brevetted lieutenant-colonel for gallantry and meritorious services in the Georgia and Carolina campaigns. He was secretary and president of the national rifle association. In 1876-89 he was judge of the court of general sessions; and in 1891-94 was judge of the superior court.
