In 1857 he was elected superintendent of public instruction for Mercer county; and in 1861 became district attorney for Venango county. He has been president of the St. Paul water board. The GilfiUan block and other business buildings in the city belong to him. He served in the south till the end of the civil war; and in 1864 was commissioned colonel of the eleventh Minnesota.
