An Irish novelist ; in 1838 he came to this country and spent more than five years roaming about the country ; after- ward settling in Philadelphia, he con- tributed largely to the periodicals of that city and New York ; then served in the Mexican War ; in 1849 returned to Eng- land and settled in London, and devoted himself to novel and story writing ; d. near London.
