§ 64. Imper. with simple vav. — The imper. with simple vav following another imper. expresses the certain effect of the first, or it may be its purpose. The first imper. in this case virtually expresses a condition which carries with it the second as a consequence. Gen. 42:18 זֹאת עֲשׂוּ וִֽחְיוּ do this and live; 2 K. 5:13 רְחַץ וּטְהָר wash and become clean; Is. 45:22 פְּנוּ אֵלַי וְהִוָּֽשְׁעוּ look unto me, and be saved. Sometimes the certain issue rather than strict consequence is expressed, as in the ironical concession, Is. 8:9 הִתְאַזְּרוּ וָחֹתּוּ gird yourselves, but (ye shall) be confounded. 2 K. 18:31, Am. 4:4; 5:4, 6, Jer. 25:5; 27:12, Ps. 37:27. Without vav, Hos. 10:12, Song 4:16, Pr. 20:13.
§ 65. Juss. and coh. with simple vav. — The coh. and juss. with simple vav are greatly used to express design or purpose; or, according to our way of thought, sometimes effect. If the purpose-clause be neg. וְלֹא with indic. is almost always used.
(a) After an imper., or anything with imper. sense, as coh. or juss. Gen. 27:4 הָבִיאָה לִּי וְאֹבֵֽלָה bring to me that I may eat; Ex. 14:12 חֲדַל מִמֶּנּוּ וְנַֽעַבֵדָה אֶת־מצ׳ leave us alone, that we may serve Egypt; Jud. 6:30 הוֹצֵא אֶת־בִּנְךָ וְיָמֹת bring out thy son, that he may die; Ex. 32:10 הַנִּיחָה לִּי וְיִֽרַאַפִּי let me alone, that my anger may burn; Gen. 42:2 שִׁבְוּ־לָנוּ וְנִֽחְיֶה וְלֹא נָמוּת buy corn for us, that we may live, and not die; 1 S. 5:11 שַׁלְּחוּ ··· וְיָשׁב וְלֹא יָמִית אֹתִי send away the ark that it may return, and not kill me; 2 S. 13:25 אַל־נָא נֵלֵךְ כֻּלָּנוּ עולֹא נִִכְבַּד עָלֶיךָ let us not all go, that we be not burdensome to thee. (b) After clauses expressing a wish or hope. Jud. 9:29 מִי יִתֵּן אֶת־הָעָם הַזֶּה בְּיָדִי וְאָסִירָה would that this people were in my hand, that I might (then I would) remove Abim.
