Years bring their spring—the green leaf comes
    Again with the early shower;—
And though flowers close and birds are mute—
    More sweet is their waking hour.

But never again for the human heart
    A second green spring can be:
Oh why was I mocked with a birth in spring
    Which never was spring to me!
