Yet, deignest Thou to sojourn in the world,
Only a human soul is Thine abode,
As Luther, man and servitor of God,
Or Melanchthon, who is Thy wisdom's bee.

My tortured Lord, I am not worthy that
Thou shouldest come beneath my roof. But Thou,
O Love, yet graciously approachest. In
Most wondrous moments do I feel that Thou
Dost take Thine ease amid the chamber of
My spirit; with mine eyes Thou gazest. Thou
Vouchsafest gently with my breath to breathe.

Wherefore to Thy most hallowed head I dare
To give my lineaments, most gracious Lord!

“The Apostles” (1911).
