Phil May joined the staff of " The Bulletin " in 1885, at the age of twenty-one, and for two and a-half years remained in Australia. His style, already formed, was in this period developed and assured. His eye for a likeness and for character, and the dexterity and decision with which he set down his impressions, became remarkable. In technical quality of draughtsmanship he never surpassed the drawings made at this time.
Nearly every notable Australian personage of the 'eighties was a subject for May's pen. His drawings might form no inconsiderable contribution to a National portrait gallery. Numerous political cartoons represent a class of work which he did not attempt elsewhere. To his Australian period, also, belong some of the best among his humorous pictures.
