He was 1st s. and h. of Archibald Campbbll, formerly Douglas, of Mains, oo. Dumbarton, by Caroline Agnes, da. of Mungo DiOK, of Piucerrow, co. Fife, which Archibald, on inheriting in 1838 the estato of Blythswood (on the death of his cousin, Archibald Campbell), assumed the name of CampfteU, (which, indeed, was the original patronymic of his family) in lieu of Douvlof, and d 11 July 1868, aged 50. He was 6. 22 Feb. 1885, at Florence, and (when but young) obtained, in 1888, (with his father) the name of OampbdL in lieu of J)cugla» ; was sometime Lieut. CoL, Scots Futileer Guards ; served in the Crimean campaign : Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria; was M.P. for Renfrewshire, 1878-74, and for the West div. thereof, 1885-02 ; was er. a Barimety 4 May 1880 (with the ordinary limitation), and was raiad to the peerage 24 Aug. 1892 (with the extraordinary limitation) as above stated. He m., 7 July 1864, in Whitehall Chapel, Augusta Clementina, 8d da. of Robert John (CARRmoTOir, formerly Smith), 2d Baron Carrihotoit ok Urroir, being 1st da. by his second wife, Charlotte Auguste Annabella, da. of {*) Lord Randolph Churchill speaks of him in, ap|)arently, an unduly disparaging fashion as " Mediocrity distinguished by a diuible'barrelled name."
