He was 27 when, in May 1824, he first entered the army as Cornet in the Sth Hussars ; Lieut. 1825 ; Captain 1826 ; Major 1S30 ; Lieut.-Col 15th Hussars 1830-34; Lieut.-Col. 11th Hussars (on which regiment he is said to have spent £10,000 a year), 1836-54 ;(») Col. in the Anny 1846 ; Major-Gen. 1854, and Lieut.-Geu. 1861 ; Inspecting-Gen. of Cavalry. 1.855-60, Col. of the Sth Dragoon Guards, 1859-00 ; and of (his old Regiment) the 11th Hussars, 1S00-08. In 1854 he commanded a Cavalry Brigade in the Crimean war,( b ) under (his br.-in-law) the Earl of Lucan [I.], and received the four-clasp Crimean medal in May 1S55. He mi. secondly 20 Sep. 1S58, at the King's Chapel, Gibraltar, Adeline Louisa Maria, da. of Spencer Horsey l)E HoitsEV, formerly KlLUElttiEE, by Louisa Maria Judith, da. of John (Rous), 1st Eaul OP Sthadhuoke. He d. at Deene Park, 28 March 1S0S, from injuries sustained by a fall from his horse. His widow hi, 28 Aug. 1873, Antonio Manuelo, Count de Lanuastke in Portugal. (") On 12 Sep. 1840 a duel took place at Wimbledon Common, between him and Capt. Harvey Tuekett in consequence of some remarks of the latter on the Earl's conduct (to Capt. Reynolds) as Commander of his Regiment. The Earl was tried by his Peers at Westm. Hall, 10 Feb. 1841, and found " not guilty," the identity of Tuekett not having been legally proved. There had been no other trial before the Upper House as a Criminal Court since that of the "Duchess of Kingston" for bigamy in 1776. See ante, p. 28, tub. " BRISTOL," under the (Vltli) 3d Earl. ( b ) " His personal gallantry at Balaklava, when he charged the Russians at the head of his Brigade, forcing his way, with about 600 cavalry, thro' some 3,600 of the enemy, and leaving half of his men and horses dead upon the field, will long be remembered, when the controversy as to the m istaken order, in obedience to which he led the charge in thclceth of the enemy's guns, is forgotten." The exploit is commemorated by the Poet Laureate Tennyson, in his " Charge of the Liyht Brigade," as under— " Cannon to right of them, cannon to left of them, Cannon in front of them volley'd and thunder'd ; Storm'd at with shot and shell, boldly they rode, and well — Into the jaws of Death, into the mouth of Hell Rode the Six Hundred.
