On (i Fob. 1540/1, lie hail :i charter of the Fief of Cassillis, &e>, to himself and the heirs mxle of his body,(*) with divers remainders over. He was one of the 8 members chosen to represent his country at the marriage of Matt, Queen of Scots, with the Dauphin of France, which was celebrated at Paris 24 April 1558. The sudden death of no less than 4(*j of these (who had opposed the French views as to the settlement of the .Scotch crown) pointed to a suspicion of poison. He in. For the purpose of obtaining a lease of tithes he was guilty of horrible cruelty in torturing the commendntor of Crossiegal in 1571, for which he was cotnpelled to find security for €2000. He joined the King's party at Stil ling in that year. The desire "to keep his estate entire" was the cause of his marriage with a woman past child bearing. She </. 2:5 .bine 1609, let. 55, and was l,ur. at Haddington with her first husband. He d. s.p. Oct. 1615.(e) VI. 1615. (J. John (Kennedy), Earl of Cassillis, &c. [8.], nephew and h., being s. and b. of Gilbert Kennedy, sometimes sti/lcd Master of Cassillis, by Margaret, da. of Ochtred Macdowall of Garthland, which Gilbert was yst. br. and h. presumptive of the last Karl. He, who was served h. to his uncle 25 July 1(116, was called "the grave and solemn Karl." He was a zealous Presbyterian and one of the 3 Klders sen! to the Divines at Westni., in 1643, to ratify the solemn league." He was also sent to Charles I in Sep. 1616 to urge him to accept of the English propositions ; and to Charles II, at Breda in March 1619, with other instructions from Pari. Justice Gen. and an extra.
