DACRE. 5 XIV. 1630. J4-. Francis (Lennard), Lord Dacre, s. and h. by 1st wife, aged 11 years 3 months and S days at the death of his father. In the civil war he sided mostly with the Pari, who in 1641 recommended him to be made Lord Lieut, of co. Hereford. He however protested against the King's trial. In 1654 (tho' a l'eer), he sat as M.P. for Sussex, during the 8 months this sitting lasted. On the death of Randal Dacre, in 1634 (the last heir male of the Dacre family), he claimed the estate of Gillesland, &c, under the award of 1473 (see ante), but was forced to compromise matters with the Howard family (who then held them), receiving however the Manor of Dacre and other considerable lauds in Cumberland, &c. He m. Elizabeth, da. and eventually coheir of Paul (Bayning), 1st Viscount Batning of Sudbury, by Ann, da. of Sir Henry Gi.kmham. He d. 12 May 1662, and was bur. at Cheveuing. Will pr. 1662. His widow TO. David Walteu, of Godstow in Woolvercott, Oxon, Lieut.-Gen. of the ordnance and a Groom of the Bedchamber to Charles II. He d. s.p. 22 April 1679, aged 68, and was bur. at Wolvercott. M.I. The lady, her- self, was on 6 April 16S0, cr. COUNTESS OF SHEPEY, for life. She d. at St. Paul's, Covent Garden, July 1686, and was bur. at Chevening, when her life peerage became extinct. Will dat. 19 June to 7 July 16S6, pr. 19 July 16S6. XV. 1662, 15. Thomas (Lennard), Lord Dache, s. and h., b. to about 1653. He was cr. M.A. (Mag. Coll.) Oxford, 23 June 1668. On 1715. 5 Oct. 1674, he was cr. EARL OF SUSSEX. He was Gent, of the Bedchamber, 1680 to 1685. By extravagance and losses by gambling he had to sell the estate of Hurstmonceaux and others. He in. 16 May 1674 (at her age of 12, and with a dower of £20,000 from the King), Lady Ann Palmer, alias FiTZKOY,( a ) 1st da. of the notorious Barbara, suo. jure, Duchess op Cleveland, her paternity being claimed both by King Charles II. and by Roger (Palmer), Earl ok Castlemaine [I.], who was not at the time of her birth separated from her said mother. He d. s.p.m.s. at Chevening, 30 Oct., and was bur. there 11 Nov. 1715, when the Earldom of Sussex became extinct and the Barony of Dacre fell into abeyance between his two daughters. Admou. 14 Nov. 1715. His widow, who was b. 29 Feb. 1661/2, and who by royal warrant 28 Feb. 1672/3 under the name of "the Lady Anne Fitzroy" had a grant of Arms,( ! ') d. 16 May 1722. Willpr. 1722. XVI. 1741. 16. Anne, suo jure Baroness Pacre, 2d and yst. da. who on the death s.p. of her sister Lady Barbara Skelton, at Paris, in 1741, inherited that title as sole surv. heir to her father. She to. firstly 15 July 1716, at St. Martins in the fields, her second cousin Richard Barrett-Lennard, s. and h. ap. of Dacre Barrett-Lennard of Belhouse, in Aveley, co. Essex, who was s. and h. of Richard Barrett Lennard( l ) of the same, a yr. s. of Richard, 13th Lord Dacre above mentioned. He d. of the small pox, v.p., Dec. 1716, but 8 months after his marriage, and was bur. at Aveley, She m. secondly, March 1717/8 (as his 3d wife), Henry (Roper), 8th Baron Teynham. He d. 16 May 1723, and was bur at Linstead, Kent. (») The following extraordinary extract is given in Lysons' "Environs" (1790), from the registers of Hampton, Midx. : " the Rt. Hon. Thomas Dakcrs, Earl of Sessex and the Lady Anne Marito, married Aug. 11, 1671." In that year this Earldom did not exist, while the Lady Anne Fitzroy was certainly num. in Feb., 1672/3. Norfolk, from his father (see under Joan, Baroness Dacre, 1458-86), inherited the estate of Belhouse in Aveley, Essex, in 1644, under the will of his second cousin, Edward (Barrett), Baron Newburgh [S.] 3d. in decent from George Barrett and Elizth.
