He appears to hare been cr. EAltL OF HUNTLY [S.J in (or possibly before) 1445,( a ^ but having m. (for his third wife) a da. of the all powerful Lord Chancellor Crichton obtained a charter, 8 Jan. 1449/50, settling that Earldom iu the first iustauce on the issue (pioliitts ct Iteredibus) of that marriage, whom failing to the next heirs of the said Earl. He distinguished himself in quelling several insurrections, between 1452 and 1-160, and acquired from the Crown the Lordship of Badeuoch, &c. He m. firstly Jane, da. and h. of Robert IvFITH (grandson and h. ap. of Sir William Keith, Great- Marischal of Scotland) with whom he acquired the estates of Cluny, Aboyue, and Glenmuick, co. Aberdeen. She d. s.p. He m. secondly, before 1426, Egidia, da. and h. of Sir John Hat, of Touch and Tullibody, co. Clackmannan. He m. thirdly, before 1450, Elizabeth, da. of William (Cbicbton), 1st Loud Ciuchton [S.J, Chancellor [S.], 1-139-54, by Agues, his wife. He d. at Huntly 15 July 1470, and was bur. at Elgin. M.I. XL 1470. 2. George (Gordon), Karl of Huntly [S.], 2,1 s.( b ) but being the 1st s. by 3d wife, sue. as such, to the Earldom [S.], 15 J nly 1470. He was P.C. [S.J aud Lieut, of the northern parts of Scotland 1491. Lord Chancellor [S.J, 1498—1501. He m 10 March 1459, {') the Lady Annabella Stewart, da. of King James I. [S.J, by Joanna, da. of John (Beaufort), Earl of Somerset, which lady (after having had 10 children by her) he divorced 24 July 1471. ( d ) He IB. (") " It appears, by legal documents in the Gordon charter clfcsst, that Alexander, 1st Earl of Huntly, was Lord Gordon in 1-1-14 and Earl of Huntly iu 1-146, while Alexander, Earl of lluntlic, is a witness to the Parly, rat. of the Barony of Hamilton 3 July 1 145. (See acts of Pari., last edit., vol. ii, p. 59.) He was thus Earl in 1445, an earlier date assigned than usual, and an old chronicle very consistently makes the constitution and creation, not now extant, iu that year. (See Fordun, Goodall's edit., vol. ii, p. 541.)" [liiddell, p. 373.J ( b ) The eldest son and heir of the 1st Earl (by his 2d wife) was Sir Alexander Seton who inherited his mother's estates ami was ancestor of the family of Seton of Touch, his descendants retaining their paternal name. On him and his issue devolved apparently the right to the Barony of Gordon [S.J cr. about 1435. See p. 50, note "d," sub "Gordon." (°) He was contracted iu marriage 20 May 144-5 (19 days after her husbaud's death) to Elizabeth, widow of Archibald (Douglas), Earl of Moray [S.J, yst da. and coheir of James (Dunbar), Earl of Moray [S.J, by (apparently) Janet, his own sister, lie being thus maternal uncle to the lady. " This marriage, however, was impeded by want of a dispensation aud was broke off." See " Iliddell," pp. 526—528, as also A. It appears that the "carnal copulation" had with this Countess Elizabeth was the ground of the divorce of the lady Annabella from this uxoriouB Earl.
