( b ) His live sisters (see p. 5-', note " f," sub " Gordon "), were his coheirs, of whom the eldest, the heir of line, Charlotte, Duchess of Richmond (d. 1842) was mother of Charles (Lennox), 5th Duke of Richmond, who by Royal lie. 1S36, took the name of Gordon before that of Lennox, on succeeding to Gordon Castle and other the estates of his maternal uncle, the 5th Dnke of Gordon [S.] and whose s. and h., Charles Henry (Gordon- Lennox). 6th Duke of Richmond, was cr. in 1S76 Duke of Gordon of Gordon Castle and Karl of Kinrara. (») It is to be observed that the Earldom of Handy was not presumed to be destined to the same line of heirs as those of the Marquisate ; it was. therefore, not allowed, 21 June 1S38. Recent enquiries .»hew that the charters immediately proceeding the Marquisate are hi favour of hiirs vJuiteoever and that then was no resignation of the Earldom when the Marquisate was created.
