Ch.), 5 March 1704/5. aged IS ; sue. his elder br., Roger Boyle, in the family estates in 170 ) : was M.P. [1.] for Midletou. 1707 11 ; for Kilmallock, 1713-15, and "for co Cork, 1715 to 1756; KG. [I.], 1733 ; Speaker of the House of Commons [I.], 1733-56; Chancellor of the Exchequer [I.], 1733-35, and again 1739. He was no less than 15 times (1731, 173o, 173S. 1740, 1741, 1 7 12, 1744, 17 16, 1748, 17->0, 1752, 1758. 1760, 1 762, and 1764), one of the Lords Justices of Ireland, being raited to the peerage, as above, with an annuity of 12.000 for 31 years and taking his seat, 26 April 175ti; Gov. of co. Cork, 1758.1°) He m. firstly Catharine, da. of Chidley Coote, of Killester, co. Limerick, by Catharine, da of Col. Robert Sandys. She (/. s.p. 5 May 1725, and Was bur. at Ballyclough, co. Cork. He m. secondly, Sep. 1726, Henrietta, da. of Charles (Boyle), 3d Karl ok Cork [I.], and 2d Earl ok Burlinoton, by Juliana, da. and h. of the Hon. Henry Noel. She, who was b. <J Feb. [Qy. at Burlington House, Piccadilly], and bap. 1 March 1700/1, at St. James's, Westm., d. in Henrietta street, Dublin, 13, and was bur. 16 Dec. 1746, at St. Patrick's cathedral there. Cork, 1761-68, being styled Viscount Boyle, from 1756 till he sue. to the peerage, fl] as above. 28 Dec. 1764, taking his seat, 22 Oct. 1765 ; Muster Master Gen. [IJ, 1766-70 ; P.C. York ;(°) Gov. of Co. Cork, 1786. He m. 15 Dec. 1763, in Dublin, Catharine, sister of William (Ponsonby), 1st Baron Ponsonby of Lmokilly [I.], da. of the Rt. Hon. James Ponsonby, Speaker of the House of Commons [I.], by Elizabeth, da. of William (Cavendish), 3d Duke of Devonshire. He d. 20 May 1807, at Castle Martyr, in his 80th year.( r ) Will pr. 1807. His widow, who was b. 29 April 1747, d. there 30 Jan. 1827, aged 80. III. 1807. 3. Henry (Boyle), Earl of Shannon, &c. [I.], »Iso Baron Carleton [G.B.], 2d but only surv. s. and h.. b. at Castle Martyr, 8 Aug. 1771 ; styled Viscount Boyle till 1.807 ; ed. at Winchester ; M.P. [I.] for ( a ) Grace, his only da. and h by his second wife, in. Charles Sackville, styled Earl of Middlesex, and d. s.p. 10 May 1763, before her husband became Duke of Dorset. ( b ) His age is given as 72 in the •' Gent. Mar/.," but E. M. Boyle (see p. 121, note " b ) states his birth to have been in 1675. ( c ) He was the leader of the Whig party in Ireland and opposed in 1753 the Government measures of appropriating an Irish surplus This was commemorated hy a medal struck in his honour. Walpole is said to have thought very highly of him ami to have styled him " The King of the Irish Commons." Portraits of him are engraved in mezzotint by John Brooke. (<*) See their names vol. i, p. 136, note " d," sub "Arran." ( c ) His mother's uncle, Henry Boyle, had been so ennobled, 19 Oct. 1711, but the dignity had become extinct at his death in 1725.
